Underworld Bride Trials 1 Playboy King - Meg Xuemei X. Page 0,57

King of the Underworld would be the most dangerous thing I could do.

I quickened my pace, wrapping my ice magic around me and merging into the deep shadows. The scouts from a few tribes kept tracking me yet failed to keep up. Some of them stepped out of the shadows in order to relocate me, but I’d been doing this for a living for several years and had become the queen of sneakiness.

Under the disguise of the night and the glamour of my ice magic, I soon lost all the tails. I didn’t desire another battle tonight, not after that dance with the king.

I headed toward my quarters, avoiding all eyes, noses, and ears, until I reached the ruin of the garden. Immediately, I registered that a pack of wolves surrounded the front half.

I could spot every shape lurking in the shadows or hiding behind the bushes.

While I was busy shaking off the vampires and other stalkers, Raina had followed me here and brought her pack. I’d been so distracted thinking of the sexy-as-sin King of the Underworld and worrying about Mari, my last kin, that I’d let the wolves track me. Part of me hoped they came for a private chat.

If a meaningful talk wasn’t on the wolves’ minds, or if they thought it’d benefit their alpha’s position to take me out now, I’d teach them a lesson before laying out their mistakes.

As I watched their movements, I was sure of one thing—they couldn’t see the cloaked dome, even though their noses smelled it and their heightened shifter senses detected its existence.

The wolves watched quietly, waiting for me to reveal my hideout. Sorry to disappoint, but I had no intention of displaying how to murmur the spell that Snow White taught me to drop the dome’s shield.

“You can all come out,” I said, as I didn’t plan to play games the whole night. Many supernaturals were the nocturnal type, but I needed my beauty sleep. “I can see you, shifters. I understand why you want to check me out, but I’m not your enemy. Instead, I’ve made an enemy out of the vampires. I’m not a threat to your pack, unlike the vampires. I also never slept with the Demon King, but the vampire princess did. Maybe more than once. I bet she planned to pit your pack against me. You know what will happen if the vampire princess becomes the Queen of the Underworld.”

I paused to let my words sink in. “Neither you nor I want that nightmare to become a reality. So I propose this truce between us: let’s not do the bidding of the vampire princess, our common enemy. Let’s vow not to go against each other until the end. Sound good? And in the final trial, may the best woman win.”

A few wolves growled. They were a suspicious breed.

“Hello again, Raina,” I said, my gaze settling on a red wolf, even though I’d never seen the beta’s animal form before. “It seems we can’t get enough of each other.”

A blue light flashed, and the red wolf shifted to a naked, unabashed Raina, who stood several feet from me. Her eyes beamed with a caramel light before her shifter power faded.

“I’m not into chicks,” she said, staring hard at me.

Wolves could be very literal.

“That’s fine with me,” I said, holding her gaze easily.

In the ruin, I was alone and she was with a pack, so she was inclined to be dominant, trying to make me bend my knees, not knowing I was a Morrigan and from a Titan bloodline.

It only took a second for her to drop her gaze first, and pained surprise passed across her strong face.

“Reveal your secrets, and then we talk,” she demanded, but her voice softened a notch.

Every supernatural respected power.

“What secrets?” I asked.

She let out a snapping sound, but a ferocious hiss answered her.

In a splash of dark light, a furry white mass landed on the branch of a dead tree nearby.

Snow White had returned, and my heart filled with relief, anxiety, and hope all at once. I wanted to interrogate the cat right away about my team. Were they safe? Were they taking care of themselves? What had they learned about Earth and Hell?

Wind caught at a red scarf around the cat’s neck. It contrasted with the green hat resting upon her head.

What the fuck?

“What the fuck is that?” Raina pointed at the Hell Cat, and the other wolves all growled at poor Snow White.

Cats and dogs didn’t get along—that
