“Ren,” I mumbled, teary again. “This is the most beautiful gift I’ve ever got.”
“You like it?” he asked.
“I love it. God, I love it so much. It’s perfect.” I leaned over and kissed him. “I love you.”
He finally smiled. “It’s not as good as your gift. I can’t believe you’re staying. Haims, that’s . . . that’s the best gift ever. You just made me the happiest man in America.”
I picked up a piece of wooden mistletoe. “Now we get to really play tic-tac-mistletoe.” I held it above my head and he gave me a smiley kiss.
Then he whispered, “I left one pouch at home. It has peach and eggplant pieces, like the emojis . . .”
I burst out laughing. “I’m the peach, right? You know I will let you win deliberately when we play that.”
He grinned and looked over the paperwork for my application to stay in America. “You’re really staying?”
“I’m home here,” I replied. “With you and Chutney in Hartbridge. It’s where I belong.”
Ren wiped away a tear and laughed, embarrassed. “Merry Christmas to me.” Then he chewed on his lip. “You know what else would let you stay here?” He met my eyes. “If we got married.”
Liv gasped, and I put my hand to my mouth, trying not to freak out, but my heart almost exploded in my chest. Ren took one of the pouches and fished out a sparkly rainbow O piece and held it up. “These are the rainbow pieces for Pride month,” he said and took my hand. “I honestly hadn’t planned to do this, but God, this feels so right. Hamish, will you marry me?”
I nodded, crying, blubbering like David in Schitt’s Creek, season five, episode thirteen.
You know the one.
Ren slipped the glittery rainbow tic-tac-toe piece onto my ring finger, and he kissed me. A teary, snot-sobbing kiss, and then we were being hugged and cried all over, and it was, without a doubt, the best day of my life.
“Merry Christmas to me,” I blubbered.
Ren pulled me against him, kissing the side of my head and holding me tight. “Merry Christmas to us.”
