Technical Threat (Westin Force #4) - Julie Trettel Page 0,81
wouldn’t do to make your dreams come true.” He leaned down and kissed me. “As soon as we get back, I’ll give you a tour and finally introduce you to the team.”
“Sounds like a plan,” I said happily, still in shock that he had done all that for me.
He left, I finished my breakfast and then I packed up and headed for my car.
The drive over to Nonna’s was easy and I didn’t even need to look at directions that time. Sage was up and sitting at the big kitchen table. I really loved how warm and welcoming Nonna’s house was.
“You’re awake. I’m shocked,” I teased my baby sister.
“Aren’t we going over to the school today?”
“Yes, but I didn’t expect you to be quite so excited about it.”
Nonna giggled. “She met a few of the local boys last night and let’s just say things are looking up.”
“Yeah, because they are seriously hot,” Sage admitted. “Robbie Maddox is particularly yummy. He’s a senior and the pitcher for the baseball team.”
“Well okay then. If a hot pitcher is going to keep your butt in school and happy about it, then I already love this guy.”
Sage rolled her eyes, finished her breakfast, then got up and rinsed her dishes before placing them in the dishwasher.
She kissed Nonna on the cheek. “Two-thirty, don’t forget.”
The older woman just smiled warmly. “How could I? You already set three alarms on my phone to be certain.”
“For what?” I asked.
“To make sure I don’t forget to pick her up from school on time.” There was a glint of amusement in Nonna’s eyes.
“You don’t have to do that. I can get her.”
“That is not necessary. We already have a plan for the day,” Nonna insisted.
“Okay, if you’re sure.”
“I am. Now, have you eaten?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Good girl. Tarron never eats breakfast.”
I snorted. “He ate as well. I promise.”
She beamed. “I knew you were going to be good for my boy.”
Sage grabbed my arm. “Come on. I’m already late, I’m going to have walk into class with everyone staring at me.”
“I’m coming. Bye, Nonna.” I gave a small wave as Sage dragged me out of the house.
Her leg bounced up and down with nerves as we made the short drive to the local school.
“Sage, calm down. You’re going to do great.”
“I really suck at math, remember?”
“We’ll get it down. I promise. Who knows, maybe that hottie Robbie Maddox tutors.”
She blushed then nudged me while laughing. “He really is cute.”
“Come on. Chin up, new girl. You’ve got this.”
Together we walked into the school and waited at the front desk.
“Susan?” someone called out from behind me.
I turned around and saw Shelby.
She hugged me. “I thought that was you.”
“What are you doing here?”
She chuckled. “I teach here. What are you doing?”
“Shelby this is my sister, Sage. She’s a junior. I’m trying to get her enrolled.”
“Hi Sage, it’s nice to meet you. If you need anything at all, just let me know. I work with the younger kids, but everyone knows everyone around here, and I’m happy to help.”
“Thanks, Shelby. I really appreciate that. I’m excited, but nervous too.”
“I understand. It’s a big change moving here.” She wrapped her arm around me and squeezed. “We just want to help you guys get settled in any way possible.”
“So how do you know my sister?”
Shelby smiled. “My mate, Ben, works with Tarron. And Susan was over at my place the other night for ladies’ night.”
Sage shot me an inquisitive look. It was clear this picture being painted greatly amused her. “Susan? My Susan? She went to a ladies’ night?”
“Yes. I dare say she even enjoyed it.”
I gave a non-committal shrug.
“Interesting. She’s usually more of a loner.”
“How about we go ahead and get you registered?”
Shelby grinned. “I have five sisters, and a little brother. I get it.”
“There are seven of you?” Sage asked.
“See, you’re not so bad at math,” I teased, earning a snarl.
A little girl walked in and tugged on Shelby’s shirt. “Mrs. Shelby, I’m not feeling so good today. Would it be okay if I called my dad to come and get me?”
“I don’t think that’s such a good idea. How about we call your mom instead?”
She shook her head. “Please. He was still sleeping this morning and Mom wouldn’t let me wake him.”
“Macie, I’m sorry sweetie, but they were called back into the field this morning.”
My head whipped to attention. Were they talking about Tarron’s unit? This little cutie’s dad was on the team too?
I squatted down to her eye level. She was so small.
