Technical Threat (Westin Force #4) - Julie Trettel Page 0,72

my mate, Kyle, last night. I’m sorry I wasn’t there to greet you. We have two boys and well, they keep me busy to say the least.”

“I can imagine.”

“I’m so glad you’re here though and I truly hope we can become fast friends. Your sisters are here as well, right? I’d love to meet them.”

“They’re staying at Nonna’s, er…”

“I know who Nonna is. That’s great, it’ll give you and Tarron some time to adjust to newly mated life.”

I lost the battle trying hard not to roll my eyes, but they just seemed to have a mind of their own.

She quirked her head slightly to the side like she was studying me.

“Is everything okay?”

“It’s fine. Tarron seems great. Everything’s just moving so quickly, that reality is now starting to catch up to me, but I’ll be fine.”

“Fine is a terrible word and generally means you are anything but fine. Look, tonight some of the girls are getting together for ladies’ night. We considered calling it a book club, but let’s be real, none of us were going to read the book, so we didn’t even bother disguising our intentions, its wine, occasionally good food, and sisterhood time. Come hang out with us. It would be great, and you can meet everyone. Oh, I know Shelby would love it. She’s been dying to meet you since I called and told her the news this morning. I think she knew before Ben which is saying something because those guys on the Force are probably even bigger gossips than any woman in history.”

“Who’s Ben?” I asked.

She frowned. “We definitely need to catch you up. Ben’s on the Force with Tarron and Shelby is his mate. We’ll be meeting over at their house tonight. Give me your cell number and I’ll text you the address and time. Please say yes. It’ll be so much fun.”

“She could always compel you to do it,” the guy behind us butted in. “You aren’t from around these parts, but Kelsey here is the best and most badass Pack Mother She-Alpha on the planet.”

I gulped. “Can you really compel people?”

She rolled her eyes. “Yes, but I don’t make a habit of using it.”

“So, you’re really an alpha?”

Her lips pursed. “Yes, I am. You have nothing to fear from me, Susan. I promise.”

“I’m not afraid, I just have, um, questions.”

“Great, happy to answer anything when I see you tonight.”

I snorted. “Persistent, I like it.”

She handed me her phone and I typed in my number.

“Oh look, the line’s finally moving. Don’t worry, we’ll give you the run down on everyone tonight.”

It was my turn next in line. The girl checked me out and I picked up the three bags I’d accumulated and started to leave.

“See you tonight, Susan.”

I nodded then turned to leave.

I had to drive back to the Lodge to unload everything I bought. The note I had left Tarron had been added to. Clearly, he had come by and found I wasn’t home.

I’m so sorry. I’ve been called away. It should only be a day or two. -Tarron

I stared at it confused at first. Called away? Did that mean he wasn’t coming home in that time? The thought made me feel even lonelier than I had earlier when I awoke with him gone. Was this really what life was going to be like for us?

My phone dinged with an incoming text. It wasn’t Tarron though, it was a number I didn’t recognize.

UNKNOWN – Hey, this is Kelsey, here’s Shelby’s address. 7:00. Tonight. No need to bring anything. Can’t wait to chat again.

It dinged again with the address and Shelby’s phone number.

I programmed both girls’ numbers into my phone.

I was here now and maybe making friends would help some. It certainly couldn’t hurt and what was the point of being home tonight if my mate wasn’t even going to be there?

I headed back out and this time drove straight to Nonna’s.

Sage ran out hugged me. “Did you hear the news? Did Sapphire tell you?”

“About the job?”

“Yes. I’m so excited.”

“I thought you hated working in the café.”

“Nope. I just hated dealing with Mom about it. This place is so cute and fun. Plus, Mabel and Sandy are great. I really think I’m going to like working there and then you don’t have to worry so much about money.”

“Sage, I do have savings. Quite a bit of it. Plus, Tarron has plenty,” I confessed. “It’s okay if you just want to concentrate on school right now.”

She shook her head. “No. Tarron’s money isn’t
