step aside.”
Humphreys cut through the wall of his guards. He crossed his arms and scrutinized London with beady little eyes. He was not a very tall man, nor did he look to be particularly strong.
“You hired yourself some muscle,” London commented with a bored tone.
“When the brat told me that you were involved, I had to ditch the old security detail and pay through the nose to get these lads. Shifters, you see. I figured you would come calling one day, and I would need to match your abilities.”
London sniffed the air, and let himself smile sarcastically at Humphreys and his guards. “Lions, bears, and tigers? Pfft. I’m a dragon. I can eat them for breakfast.”
All of the four other shifters growled or made other disgruntled noises of disapproval.
“Where is she?” London snapped. “Bring her to me. She better be unharmed.” He could smell her. She was close, and she was scared.
“No,” Humphreys answered. “She’s my insurance policy at the moment. So is Lucille. I need to know what information you have on me and who you’ve told. Then we can talk.”
“You’re not getting away. Interpol has been called. They have the proof they need on you and Rochelle. You’ll be arrested. This is it, Humphreys. You’re done.”
The man’s face was red, bordering on purple. He was sputtering in anger. “You’re lying.”
“He isn’t,” one of the guards cut in.
“Might as well kill him, then. My ride will be here soon enough.” Humphreys retreated back, and the guards formed a semi-circle around London.
He sighed and shook his head. He didn’t want to think that he was outnumbered, but he was. The only way he was going to be able to get a handle on all four was to shift into his dragon. In that shape, he would be large and stronger than a lion, a tiger, and a bear.
“Don’t let him shift, lads,” one of them said.
Well, shit. They had come to the same conclusion.
As one, the four guards attacked him.
Here we go, his dragon roared.
Chapter Twenty-Five
London
London was definitely outnumbered as he fought off four other male shifters.
But even in his human form, he had the edge over them. He had been alive much longer than them. More than that, he had grown up with two brothers during a rougher time. A time when young men had to prove themselves with feats of strength, either defending their family lands or fighting in the king’s army.
His body was essentially one well-honed fighting machine.
He was distracted by two different thoughts: the fact that he hadn’t seen Bethany and the fact that Humphreys had said he was waiting for a ride.
London could only imagine that the ride in question was a helicopter. It was the only thing that made sense. Why else would Humphreys leave his home to come to the country, where there were sprawling lawns that could comfortably accommodate a landing helicopter?
He could only hope that the man had no plans of taking Bethany with him. There was no way London was letting that happen.
He struck out, hitting an opponent straight in the nose. The sound of breaking cartilage filled the room, and it was like the fighting bell had been hit.
One of the men punched him in the gut while another aimed for his head. Both blows landed, leaving him momentarily disoriented, but he didn’t take long to recover. He feigned to the left, but struck to the right. His own hit got the guard straight in the temple. The man stumbled back, shaking his head. London knew the blow would have caused a god awful ringing in the man’s head.
He took this time to swipe out his leg, knocking another guard on his ass.
This was his chance.
London booked it for the door. He was barely out of the house before he let the shift take over him.
It had been a long time since London had shifted into his dragon to fight. Too long. As the shift overtook him, he heard his beast sigh with relief. He could only hope that the dragon would remain on task and not go off into the night sky for a quick fly around.
There was a mate to save.
Not to mention four very pissed off shifter bodyguards. It was impressive, really. How Leonard had managed to get different types of shifters to cooperate and work together was impressive.
Or perhaps he had just set the right salary. Some men were despicable like that. They would do unspeakable things and ignore all kinds of injustices and brutalities
