Succubus Trials - L.L. Frost Page 0,74

take down the Dreamer. He expended a massive amount of power without having to sunder himself, something unheard of among his kind. Usually, baku demons have to divide themselves, producing offspring if they become too powerful. Before the battle with the Dreamer, Aren had been the largest baku I’d never seen in Dreamland.

Tally puffs her cheeks out in obvious annoyance. “I’m getting sick of hearing him recount the epic battle. Like he did the whole thing single hooved. He holds freaking storytime for the younger baku.”

“I was wondering why I hadn’t felt his pervy gaze lately.” When Aren’s not watching out for his baby sister, he likes to creep on me and the guys, hoping to catch us doing it.

There’s apparently a whole gaggle of demons in Dreamland who find my life entertaining. But I haven’t felt any watchful gazes in the last few weeks. Hopefully, that means the Adie Channel is officially turned off.

“I’ll admit, it’s been nice feeding on dreams without his judgy stare,” Tally commiserates.

Baku demons normally eat nightmares, but my pink friend likes to snack down on happy dreams, much to the dismay of her family. But since it allowed her to master cake design and management in a matter of days, I count her snack habits as an acceptable evil.

“Is he still hanging out in town? Or has he moved on?” I want to visit him and the members of the BBB in Dreamland.

Unlike succubi and incubi, baku have the unique ability to see the human plane from Dreamland. If Xander’s friend can’t track Victor Hesse’s location in town, maybe Aren can. But I need to be able to find him first.

The gray, misty world closely mirrors that of the human plane, but many parts of it are still stuck in the past. If Aren moved on to a different area of the world, it will take time to find him. Though I can just catch another baku to send along a message. The little demons don’t fear me as much now that I’m considered an ally of Tally and Aren.

She cuts me an amused glance. “You’ll most likely find him in the park if you go looking.”

Nodding my thanks, my attention shifts back to the witches as Reese pulls out a bundle of herbs. I can’t smell them yet, but my nose already itches. They won’t banish demons from the human plane, but they don’t make it comfortable to be in the same room.

Tally doesn’t look at all concerned as she goes to perch on the edge of one of the chairs, planning to stay for the big cleansing. Whatever magic allows her to leave Dreamland must also make her immune to human witchcraft. Or she’s just built up a tolerance after living with the guys for so long.

A tolerance I don’t possess.

I shift from foot to foot. “Do you need me here for this?”

Xander glances up from his laptop, his eyes unfocused. He’s already lost in the spell he plans to perform. “No, we’re good if you want to step out.”

Thankful, I head down the hall to the office and poke my head inside.

Kellen sits behind a large oak desk, a paper planner spread out before him. With an old-fashioned, corded phone pressed to his ear, he jots down notes.

When he catches me hovering, he holds up a finger.

I close the door quietly and wander over to the wall on the left. It holds a sepia-toned map, artistically rendered, of the mortuary, the back picnic area, and a cemetery beyond. I hadn’t realized there was a cemetery back there, but it makes sense for the ease of burial.

The click of the phone returning to its cradle pulls me around, and I find Kellen leaning back in the leather office chair, his hands folded over his stomach.

“Are you all done?” I ask, eager to be out of this place.

He nods “As much as I can be for the night. I have to come back tomorrow during regular business hours to contact the companies not currently open. I’ll need the van.”

I cock my head to the side. “Why can’t you take your car?”

His fiery brows lift. “If you recall, the van is mine.”

“Nope, nope, nope.” I shake my head in denial. “I stole it fair and square, and we’re past the point of take back.”

Leaning forward, he stands from that desk. “You know that’s a vintage replica that you’re carting your imps around in, right?”

I hadn’t, actually. When he didn’t fight hard to reclaim it,
