I fought down my jealousy. This male had given me the chance to be with my mate. I had no right to resent his involvement. How could he have stayed out of it when I was lost to sensation; and lost to emotions so powerful they took me over?

‘Exactly,” he agreed with my unvoiced thoughts. ‘They took us both over. Your emotions are so raw and all-consuming I am becoming addicted to them, I think.’

Before I had a chance to feel weirded out by that comment, the whole ship shuddered and screeched around us.

Instantly, I was on my feet, racing for the cabin door. Jenna was making scared little noises behind me.

Looking back over my shoulder, I saw how delightfully naked and rumpled she looked. Pride blossomed in my chest. I’d made her look like that. I’d made love to my podmate and satisfied her. There was no doubt in my mind that that was how she was feeling right now.

And scared. The sudden movement of our ship had terrified her.

‘What’s happening?’ I heard her say into my head.

Shock had me stalling in the doorway. Could we have initiated the mental link my parents had? But I wasn’t even Danan anymore. I’d ejaculated inside her. Or Charsus’ body had. How could the link have formed when I no longer had my body?

‘I don’t know. Let me see what’s going on. Stay here and hold on,’ I said.

I felt her shock as she experienced our communication without words.

‘No, take her with you. Strap her into the co-pilot’s chair!’ ordered Charsus.

‘Charsus?’ she said, totally blindsided by hearing both of us in her mind.

He was right, of course. She couldn’t hold on if the ship did much more jerking about. Right now it was still again, but who knew how long before it started shifting under us again.

I held out my hand to her and she jumped, naked, from the bed and took it. Together we raced the short distance to the flight deck so Jenna could throw herself down into the co-pilot’s seat.

Once I was sure she was down and doing what was needed to secure herself, I looked at the viewing screen to the front of us.

Nothing! I could see nothing in the darkness.

I looked to the rear viewing screen, which sat side by side with the forward view.

Nothing!

Suddenly a huge bloody eye appeared, filling the whole of the rear screen.

Jenna screamed and clutched at the armrests. My heart nearly stopped beating. Whatever was out there was huge. And it knew we were in here!

‘Oh God, oh God, this is like Jurassic Park. That’s like the T Rex. It’s going to kill us!’ Jenna moaned in her mind.

I didn’t know what Jurassic Park was, but I had some inkling about dinosaurs. Mother had mentioned them when she was trying to work out how humans could have existed while dinosaurs roamed the earth. I remembered her once saying that T Rex would have devoured every human it found if they’d existed at the same time.

‘Focus, young Danan!’ Charsus snapped.

Immediately, I brought my mind back to the issue at hand. Something monstrously large was currently studying our spaceship like a child studies a new toy. Or maybe a gift it needs to unwrap to get at the toy within.

How strong was the fuselage? It had to be tough enough to withstand the pressures of deep space, meteor storms and wormholes, could it also withstand a massive creature hell-bent on cracking this egg open to get at the inside?

“Strap in!” Jenna yelled, seeing me wavering like a lost child.

I immediately did as I was told, mainly because I could think of nothing else to do in that moment.

The ship had begun to shake and bump around again, this time with more force. I clung to the armrests and tried to work out what we could do.

‘We still have fuel. We might not be able to blast our way off this planet, but we might have enough power to blast us away from this thing!’ Charsus yelled into my head, just as freaked out as I was.

That, at least, was a relief. He was a thousand years old and he was just as terrified and at a loss as I was. His idea was a Hail Mary he didn’t expect to work.
