I said. I was so angry when your brother died. I had to go to therapy. I … I was so sad, and I wasn’t the mother you needed. I didn’t know how to be. I love ye more than anything.”
“Why didn’t ye reach out then?”
“I was scared,” she admits. “I thought ye hated me.”
“No…” I shake my head, “I could never hate ye, Ma.”
She pinches my cheeks until they hurt, but I relish it because she used to do that when I was a boy. “Yer so handsome. Just like yer brother.” Ma and Da finally turn their attention to Dawn. “And who is this lovely lady and young man?”
“I’m Aidan.” He holds out his hand for introduction.
“Oh, manners. How nice to meet you, Aidan.”
“I’m Dawson, but everyone calls me Dawn.”
“Dawn. That’s beautiful,” Ma says, then her eyes drop to Dawn’s stomach, then to Aidan, and then to me.
She jumps as she stops breathing when realization hits her. “Yer children?”
I nod. “Well, Aidan is my nephew. Yer grandson. Seems Conor and Dawn knew each other before…” he died. “We had no idea until six months ago, when I pulled out Conor’s picture.”
Dawn blushes. “I know what it looks like.” Because the night between her and Conor was a one-night stand.
Da and Ma fall into each other’s embrace, both of them a sobbing mess at this point. “He has Conor’s eyes.”
“He does,” I agree.
“Can I hug ye, Aidan?”
Aidan wraps his arms around Ma, and she sags, like a big fucking weight has been lifted off her shoulders. Her hand cups the back of Aidan’s head, burying her face in the tiny nook of his neck.
“I can’t believe it,” she cries.
“Told you,” Dawn nudges my shoulder.
“I owe ye, Lips.”
“No, you’ve already given me everything, Skirt.” She rubs her belly and looks at her son with his grandparents.
I’ve fought for love, and I’ve learned there’s nothing more important to fight for. Everything means nothing if love isn’t the center.
