Sing, Canary - Ashley Amy Page 0,6

enough for me to feel the honesty of my angel. Lyra was the best thing that happened to me, second to my wife.

Laying back on my bed, I had my cell to myself. The warden feared placing anyone in here with me. I was too dangerous from the stunts I pulled when I first arrived. In the corner of the prison, they isolated me as much as possible.

The only warmth I felt, came from the woman who I spoke to now.

Please, my Angel. Sing me to slumber once again. Help me succumb to the rest my worried mind needs. With my final prayer, her gentle words trickled into my ear. I was a damned man, but I would see the light through her.

In the night’s lingering breeze,

I’ll leave you with my memories.

They’ll be old thoughts of both of us.

Ones that’ll never settle in the dust.

When I’m gone someday, by tomorrow,

I never want you to feel that sorrow.

Your heart only aches in sweet memory.

It is the placeholder for the world to see.

So, rest easy, my dearest child.

Who has restless thoughts going wild.

That even when I’m gone from this day,

Your heart will remember what I’d say.

This is my lullaby for the broken and lost.

To a person who paid for love at the highest cost.

With her haunting voice, I fell fast asleep. I didn't know how she knew a tune that fit me so, but it's what I needed to hear to get me through the night.

Lyra

There was only one other female in this place. I noticed it after my first day here. From the looks of it, the rumors were true. The worst of the worst were in this place.

I saw one other woman, and it made me wonder what she did to get here. Her raven hair was chin length with heavy bangs over her slanted eyes. She was stunning, but she was always beside Barcel, the vampire king. He was my biggest threat in this place because he had been my father’s.

Most in here had issues with my family. Power always made enemies. I knew I wouldn't make many friends in this place, and I wasn't here for that.

Still, I knew one who was wrongly accused in this prison. As I sat at an empty table in the cafeteria, my eyes found Roan. He sat in the corner, avoided by all.

He never mentioned being in prison, but when he became my charge, I made sure I knew everything there was to know about him when Delilah died. Charges weren't meant to meet their protectors, so I watched him from my spot, waiting for any sign that he might recognize me.

His long, black hair was pulled back at the nape of his neck. A few pieces tapered around his masculine face. Without nearing him, I already knew he was an incubus. His natural pheromones struck me a little stupid.

I couldn't deny I was attracted to the man with a haunting past. Still, as a vessel for the creator, I couldn't intervene with his divine work.

The creator saw something within this demon. After two years of our midnight companionship, I started understanding what it was. Roan had a soul. He had something that was very rare among demons.

For his kind to gain one, an angel had to willingly give him their grace. The crime reports say his wife was robbed of hers right before her death. Everyone assumed it was her demonic husband, but they didn't understand he had already been in love with her.

He already had grace inside of his hollow chest. I never asked about it, but I comprehended how much he suffered when he lost her. He felt it all when he held her dead body on that rainy street.

Before I could stalk him more, someone whipped my shoulder around to face them. I found one of the vampires that belonged to Barcel. His leering grin tried to figure out what my body looked like underneath the orange jumpsuit.

My eyes looked around us, checking if I had any allies among the masses. I already knew that answer as August prepped my first project in the halls. He was the only one who I could rely on.

"The sheltered princess finally stands among us. What are you going to do with us real men now that Daddy can't keep you locked behind his keep?" He licked his bottom lip, studying the bumps of my breasts under the large top.

I was grateful the outfit didn't show me off in this place. I
