hand he had put on her stomach. “I am most definitely not. But would that be so bad?”
He took a step closer to her and wrapped her up in his arms while one of his hands went up to cup her face. He kissed her softly. “Poppy, one day, you and I are going to be parents, and we are going to do a kick-ass job of it.”
She lowered her eyes, the burn of her tears prickling the back of her throat.
“I know we weren’t raised by conventional families, and you didn’t really know your mom and dad, since they died when you were so young. But I want you to know something. You are going to be a great mother. I believe in you. I believe in us. We’re a team, Poppy. A good one. Probably the best one. When it happens, we’ll rock it.”
Until Shaw spoke those words to her, Poppy hadn’t realized just where her uneasiness at being a parent had come from. But his words rang out inside of her heart and spoke true. She was scared of completely fucking up her children. After all, her uncle hadn’t exactly been a stellar example of parental love.
But she had Shaw.
They loved each other so much, they really could take on anything together.
“I love you, Shaw Eagan.”
“I love you, too, Poppy Cain.” There was a twinkle in his eyes. “Think we could make a change to that before we start a family? Maybe switching the Cain out for something else, like Eagan?”
Poppy’s breath caught. “Are you asking me to marry you at our friends’ baby shower?”
Shaw shook his head, plastering an overly innocent look onto his face. “Oh, no. I’d never do that. I’m just testing the waters, checking to see if you’d be interested in something like that.”
She shook her head with a breathy sigh. “You know I’d say yes if you were to ask. In a heartbeat.”
“Good. Then I’ve got some planning to do.” He kissed her again, this time with more passion.
Their lips moved together, and they forgot where they were until the others starting a leering cheer. Poppy giggled against her man’s lips.
Yup.
Life had never been this good, and it was only going to get so much better.
