Secrets Worth Keeping (Finding my Home #2)- Nikita Parmenter Page 0,168
quick flash of a grin.
This is the weirdest detective I’ve ever met.
“The academy goes from freshman in high school all the way up to the end of college. You will be going for the duration, I imagine. Regardless of the circumstances behind you going, it is an incredible opportunity and one that most of the students pay extortionate amounts for.”
“What if they don’t have the college course we want?” Luc questions sounding sceptical of the whole thing.
“They will don’t worry” he says confidently. “We’ll be in touch with any information about the case but don’t expect to hear from us often, we want to keep your position as quiet as possible until it’s time for you to testify.”
That sounds fair. I guess I should try and figure out what I want to study, I never planned on going to college and now I’ve got no choice. I don’t think I could have ever predicted this.
“The academy is in an isolated position and due to the prestige of the students that attend it, has state of the art security for their safety. It’s educating the worlds next leaders, entertainers and business moguls as such you’ll find that the curriculum is not only of a higher standard but that you’ll also be expected to take some classes that you wouldn’t find at a normal high school or college. There’s no point asking what the classes are, your timetable will be tailored to you. Although, the headmaster is aware of the situation and has been told to make sure that there is at least two of you in each class to ensure that should any issues arise you are not separated” he says watching us for our reaction.
I keep my face blank deciding not to give anything away. I’m fairly certain that this guy is legit and one of the good guys but there’s still something slightly off, like he’s feeding us carefully constructed truths and not telling us everything. For that reason alone I adopt my poker face. Noticing out of the corner of my eye, Trick and Riot doing the same either side of me which means that more than likely they’re all doing the same.
These guys are always so in sync.
“Ok then, all of the students that attend get a monthly stipend for food and school necessities.”
“You’re kidding?” I ask incredulously. “You’re telling me that a bunch of rich kids that could easily afford to eat in five star restaurants every single day get given money for the sort of thing that kids usually only get on scholarships and usually only for the basics?”
“Yes, like I said these kids are the kids of the countries elite. Which means the school gets a lot of funding and donations from people who consider a couple of hundred grand, pocket money” he says grimly, clearly as pissed at the injustice of it as I am.
“Fucking hell” I grumble, I would’ve killed for something like this not that long ago but now that I can afford it, I’d rather pay for it myself and it pisses me the fuck off that in order to get money, you have to have it in the first place. Rich people get given handouts all the fucking time in the hopes that they’ll spend obscene amounts of money at the places that give them the free stuff in the first place.
“There’s no school uniform, but you are expected to dress smartly. If you haven’t packed anything suitable then I suggest you use the card with your monthly stipend on. It would be better if you at least tried to blend in, under the current circumstances” he says although I get the feeling he knows that it’s a useless plea.
“Yeah I’m fairly certain that’s not going to happen” Jensen chuckles.
“I didn’t think so but I’m trying to give you all the warnings you should have so it doesn’t come back to bite me on the ass later” he says, his professional act dropping completely as he scrubs a hand through his hair and grins.
“Fair enough” Trick says watching him closely.
“You’ll get a handbook given to you with the academy rules and I imagine it will get used as a door stop but once again I urge you to read it. The teachers are as bad as the kids and will dislike you on sight, not just because your outsiders but because you’re completely unknown to them. Everyone knows everyone else there by reputation alone.”
This place is sounding more and more fun the more I learn about it, and I’m not sure I’m being sarcastic when I say that. At least we’re going to be entertained.
“I need all of the sim cards out of your phones, I’m sorry but they need to be destroyed.”
Logic leaves me.
“What if he can’t get hold of us if he needs to” I ask Trick quietly but panicking all the same.
He turns his back to the detective and Jensen starts asking him some truly ridiculous questions to drown out what I’m currently freaking out about.
“Sweetheart, I promise you that he will be able to find us if he needs to remember?” he questions and my heartbeat relaxes.
The burner phone.
He can still contact us with the burner phone.
Thank fuck.
“Sorry, all reasonable thought left me for a second there” I whisper quietly and he brings me in and kisses me.
“Don’t worry about it, Sweetheart” he smiles before turning back to the detective as Jensen comes to the end of his ridiculous questions.
We each take out our sim cards snap them and discard the pieces.
“Good, do you have any questions?” he asks eyeing Jensen as he goes to open his mouth, “real questions?” He corrects smirking.
The car is silent for a while as we all absorb the information just given to us.
“That’s what makes it untraditional then?” Riot asks, “that it’s a school instead of a safe house and an exclusive one at that?”
“Partly. Despite the issues that you may have it is safe from the man that your father worked for” he says to me and I raise my eyebrow curiously, “I can’t go into that now. It’s complicated. We will need you to look over some mugshots soon to see if you recognise any of them,” he says and I nod my agreement. “Good, the other reason is that it’s not untraditional for all of you, it’s more just Ever.”
“What? Me, why would it only be untraditional for me?”I ask sounding as confused as the guys look.
“It’s an academy for boys, Ever’s going to be the first girl ever admitted.”
