innuendo around Mom and Pop.

“Just remember, Jesse,” Jim put in gruffly, “if anyone gives you shit during football, you talk to the coach.”

“It’s cool, Dad,” Jesse said in too light a tone. “They won’t.”

Yeah, they probably would. Jesse had taken a lot of shit from his football team after coming out last year. But the athletics administration, and the team coaches, had stood by him. He’d even had a chance to talk to Owen Nelson when Owen visited the campus. Owen had been the Badger’s first gay star athlete, a massively popular wrestler who’d graduated three years earlier. He told Jesse to hang in there and talked to the campus LGBT groups about showing up to support Jesse at the Badger football games.

But all of that had been when football was out of season. Soon there would be actual games with actual fans in the stands. Still, Jesse had relaxed a lot around it all. I knew his priorities were his family, his nursing degree, and me. Football was a distant fourth. And I knew, no matter what, he’d be okay.

“So, we never did hear the whole story,” Susan said, putting some more potato salad on her plate. “What happened at Quiz Bowl nationals?”

“Yeah. Or with the flag-football team?” added Jim. “And who won the bet between your two houses? Wasn’t there something like ten grand on the line?”

“Oh my God.” I gasped and shook my head. “The crazy sh-er-stuff that went on last year! I’m not sure you’d believe us if we told you.”

Jesse met my gaze, and we both grinned.

“Hedgehog, man,” Jesse whistled in disbelief.

“And Bubba!” I crowed.

“And Jax and Rand,” Jesse grinned. “I did not see that coming.”

“I know, right?”

So much had happened. And all of it was thanks to Dean Robbert’s ridiculous ultimatum.

“Well, tell us. We’ve got all afternoon.” Susan settled back on her heels on the blanket.

“Better than TV.” Jim grinned. “I wanna hear it all.”

So we told them. But as for you, dear reader…you’ll just have to read the next story to find out.

Chapter One

Sean

“Go back! Go back! Go back!”

Go back to what? my brain queried. Simpler times? Home? The starting line?

Or perhaps to the moment before I volunteered to be on the Alpha Lambda Alpha flag football team. Yes, let’s go back to that, please.

I watched guys scurry around the large, open field next to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, baseball diamond but could discern no rhyme or reason to their movements, and therefore, they were difficult to emulate. There was so much stopping and then there’d be what looked like a random melee. I’d read the flag football rules online, so I knew the focus was on the football, but surely there must be more rules to this game than the three-sentence description that was given to me at—

The group scattered like a flock of birds startled into flight, and then they were heading right at me.

Um.

I turned and attempted to run away.

“Ooof.” I staggered as a body collided with mine. I turned to see the flag football team captain, Tray Blackstone, scowling at me.

“How the fuck are you always in the way?” he demanded rudely, his lip curled up. He ran on past me, half-backward, looking in the distance.

Well, if he was running in that direction, perhaps
