why he was here all the time, the skin on my fingers—where his own had held mine—buzzing with equal intensity at the memory of his touch.
When I woke up, it was already six in the evening and I could hear crashing and banging coming from the general kitchen area. I threw on yoga pants and a T-shirt—also gifts from Nikos, who did indeed have a fully stocked closet full of clothes in case of visitors—and then splashed some water across my face to wake myself up. Then I went rushing toward the kitchen, wondering what on earth was going on… and if he was okay.
When I arrived, I took in the enormous kitchen done in dark wood and marble, with an island in the middle and gigantic porcelain sinks taking up almost an entire side.
It wasn’t my first time in the kitchen, but I didn’t know if I’d ever get tired of staring at it. The place was a freaking marvel, and I would have taken my sweet time admiring it if it hadn’t been for the two legs sticking out of one of the bottom cupboards.
“Oh my God, are you okay?” I asked, moving quickly in that direction and trying to figure out what might have happened. Had someone murdered him and shoved him right into a cabinet, for some unknown reason?
I heard muffled laughter from the cabinet, though, and saw his legs shaking, and decided that no, he wasn’t dead, and yes, he sounded… well, like he was in a pretty good mood.
Then I heard a muffled exclamation. Unfortunately, it was so muffled that I couldn’t understand a single word of it.
“What?” I asked, getting down on the ground near the set of legs. “Nikos, I can hear you talking but I can’t understand what you’re saying. Are you… Are you okay in there?”
“Mmmfffff mmfff og mfff!” he answered.
Right. Well, that wasn’t exactly helpful. Was he stuck under there or something?
Instead of asking again from my current position, I climbed toward him, getting close enough to where my face was peeking into the top shelf of the cupboard from which he was sticking out.
I very carefully didn’t consider how close I was to him, or how intimate this positioning actually was. There was no time for that, I told myself; the guy could legitimately be in trouble, and sitting there getting giddy about how close I was to his butt—and other nether regions—was the exact opposite of helpful.
“What’s going on?” I asked breathlessly, once I was situated and thought he’d actually be able to hear me.
“I’m looking for my best oven dish, and I’m having a horrible time finding it,” he said casually. Like this was the most logical explanation in the entire world.
“I see,” I said lightly. “Is it common to actually have to get into your cupboards and climb around in there looking for dishes? Or do you not use this one often?”
“Haven’t used it in years,” he answered. “I’m afraid it’s been pushed back by all the dishes I use regularly.”
“Right,” I said. “Um… Do you need some help? Perhaps a… I don’t know, a smaller person?”
Because there was no denying that I was smaller than him. I was only five-three if I wasn’t slouching, and he had to be over six feet, as well as generally very well built. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that I would fit into that particular spot better than he did.
Evidently I’d hit on something there, because Nikos started wriggling like he was going to try to get back out of the cupboard. Unfortunately, I was now straddling his legs so I could get into a position where I would be able to hear what he was saying, and that wriggling sort of took my own legs out from under me, so that by the time he got out of the cupboard, I was actually lying on top of him.
Lying on top of him and intimately aware of how excited he seemed to be about the position.
When he came out of the cabinet, our faces managed to match up exactly right, and I found myself staring down at him, open-mouthed in surprise and breathless with the struggle I’d been going through trying to either keep up with him or get away from him—as well as way too turned on by the way he’d been moving and the feel of his body between my legs.
Nikos looked equally surprised, which made sense, since he’d gone into the cabinet
