that happened, she wouldn’t be there to help me.

“She made me feel inadequate of controlling my life. I guess somewhere along the line, I started to believe that. When something out of my control happens, especially lately, all these questions cram into my brain, and I freak out because I know I’m going to fail, and then what would I do?”

He felt a wet drop land on his chest. He held her tighter, wanting her to go on. “Why especially lately?”

She snuggled into him. “I don’t know. Maybe because I’m getting older, which means I’m getting closer to the failure she knows I will be. Maybe because life keeps piling one thing after another on me and I can’t cope. Too much to control.”

“What if you made that one pile of things into many piles of one thing?” he suggested.

“What do you mean?”

“What if, from your pile, you choose the most important thing and put that by itself.” She nodded. He continued. “Then go to that new pile and deal with it by itself, shoving away the rest.”

“Then what?” she asked.

“Go back to the big pile and pick out the next most important thing. Put it in its own pile, all the other stuff gone for the moment.”

She was quiet. He wasn’t sure if that was good or bad. He scoffed at himself. He was giving advice when he couldn’t deal with his own issues. What a joke.

He said, “Ignore what I just said—”

“No,” his mate said, “that makes sense to me.” She pushed up onto her elbows. “If I focus on one thing and accomplish it, not worrying about the other things, then eventually, everything will get done, right?”

“You won’t be overwhelmed, I don’t think anyway.”

A big smile spread across her face. “That might work. If I don’t freak out and forget it all.”

He crunched his abs and gave her a brief kiss. “Don’t worry. I’ll be there to remind you.”

She pushed his back to the ground, pressing her chest to his and throwing her leg over his body. “Promise, mate?” she said with a grin, wiggling down his torso until his cock kissed her entrance.

“I promise, mate,” he replied, once again, crunching his abs, his hips raising instead of his shoulders. “I promise,” he breathed out as she engulfed him.

A short time later, he lay on his back, his mate breathing steadily on his chest. He thanked the goddess for bringing her into his life. He would treasure his mate for his entire life, but the sun was about to start its cycle.

He rolled her onto her side, waking her. “Sorry, love,” he said.

“It’s fine.” She wiped hair from her face.

He pulled her clothes from under the dirt and shook them off.

Wren huffed. “Why are my clothes buried in the dirt? I have to wear those till I get home.”

“I washed them for you.” He noted her anger and didn’t understand it.

“You washed them? By covering them with dirt?”

“Of course,” he replied. “How else would you wash them?”

She stared at him with wide eyes. He laid her shirt out, perfectly white where it should’ve been and bright colors where called for. Next he unburied her shorts and mysterious things she wore under her clothes.

She snatched them up and studied them. “Is that why you put mud on my shirt with the berry stain?”

Ah, he’d forgotten about that. “Yes.”

She rolled her beautiful eyes. “Why didn’t you tell me you can make the dirt clean things?”

“Because you wouldn’t have understood what I said,” he answered.

“Oh, right.” She slipped a see-through garment up her legs, that he wanted to wrap over his face so he would be surrounded by her smell everywhere. It even had holes for his eyes to see out. “Wish I had superpowers.”

“Magic?” he clarified. “Of course, you have magic. You’re my mate.”

She froze with her hips in the air, pulling up the clothing. “I have magic?”

“How do you think all those nuts came off the tree at the same time when we gathered food? I didn’t do that. And I saw the tree you sat under beat away the warriors who held you and your friends before I left.”

“But I didn’t do anything either time.”

He kissed her forehead. She was so adorable when she had no idea what was going on. She grabbed the item that caressed her amazing breasts. What a lucky piece of material.

He climbed to his feet and headed to the front of the berm. “I’ll be back tonight.”

“Where are you going? You said
