girls glanced at each other. “Did he just say yes?” Lilah asked.
“He could have,” Daphne said, “but yes to what? We didn’t ask a question.”
He scowled and mumbled with his head down. Then he leaned over, gently setting her on her feet. He put a hand to his chest. “Xenos,” he said then tapped his chest again.
Wren did the same. “I am Wren.”
His eyes softened toward her, and he put a hand on her cheek. “Jes,” his head tilted again, “Vi estas Wren.” His touch was a surprise, but it was warm and sent a wave of calmness through her. The way he looked at her, she wanted to believe he cared for her. But that was impossible.
“Hey,” Lilah said, tapping her chest, “I’m Lilah.”
“And I’m Daphne.”
He repeated both of their names. Then his face returned to a grimace as he ran his fingers through his drying hair. Her fingers wanted to do the same thing. She clasped her hands behind her back to avoid the temptation.
He kept mumbling to himself. She was frustrated also, not being able to communicate. He stopped, put his hands on his hips, and looked at each of them, still frowning. He put a hand on his chest again. “Xenos. . .” All she understood was his name.
He scooped her again creating a squeak from her. With her in his arms, he smiled and kissed her on the forehead. She had the distinct feeling he was laughing at her. She’d see how he felt the next time a strange woman picked him up without any warning. Jealousy streaked in her heart. She didn’t like the idea of any woman touching him.
Well, shit. Dammit, she always did this with her characters. Fell in love with them almost instantly. That’s what she took her jealousy to mean—this person was hers, and nobody had better lay a finger on him; unless they wanted to be in her next book and die a gruesome death.
She swallowed the emotions rising in her as he carried her past her cousins. He looked over his shoulder, spoke, then continued forward.
Wren leaned back so she could see the girls. “Come on. I think he can help us.”
Lilah huffed. “Why is he carrying you? What makes you so special.”
She smiled. This was an opportunity she couldn’t resist. Her friend walked right into this. “Because he can’t carry someone with such a big ass.” To her credit, Lilah laughed along with her and Daphne.
“God, I stepped right into that, didn’t I?” Her older cousin’s eyes scanned the backside of the man. “You know, I think I like this view much better. Wren, you don’t know what you’re missing.”
Wren inhaled sharply, glancing at his face which remained neutral. She couldn’t believe her cousins would say that out loud—Wait. Yes, she could. Thankfully, he didn’t speak English.
“Oh yeah,” Daphne added, “the narrow piece of material barely covers the goods. He might as well as just take it off.”
“Woo-hoo,” Lilah twirled her arm in the air. “I got a five. I'll slip into his G-string if he’ll come over here and shake that thing.” She continued to cheer like she was at a male stripper show. “Come to mama, sweet cheeks.” She reached toward his ass and squeezed her hands as if she were testing the globes’ muscle tone.
Daphne replied, “I wouldn’t mind licking this entire side of his body. I bet he’d taste good.”
“Oh, nice idea, Daph,” Lilah said to her. “I like the way you think. Do you think he’d go for a foursome?”
Wren couldn’t hold back the laugh. Her head tilted back, then she glanced at him. His cheeks, on his face, were bright red. His eyes were as big as tennis balls.
Oh my god, she thought. No way.
“Hey, Lilah,” Wren said leaning back, but keeping her eyes fixed on his face, “how about we all get naked and go swimming.”
His eyes bugged out, jaw dropping, as he glanced at her. “Oh my god,” Wren said louder than she wanted, “you understand every word we’re saying, don’t you?”
Behind her came a duet of “What!?”
Chapter Six
Xenos carried his mate in his arms. Exactly where she would always be. She was perfect. Even her toes were adorable. When he told her “You are my mate and I will forever protect and love you,” he meant it. Too bad she didn’t know what he promised her.
He never would’ve guessed that flat thing was a shoe. Whatever world they came from was much different than his.
That was never more
