doesn’t know how to turn off the setting that would track his every move.”
“Morgan!” Jade sat up. “I don’t think we should do that.”
Morgan shrugged. “Why not?”
“Well,” Tiffany said, leaning forward, “what exactly are we going to do with that information?”
“That’s a good point,” Morgan said. “You see how hard the entire legal process has been with my mom’s killer, and we actually have evidence. And a confession! So it’ll probably be pretty hard to prove his guilt no matter what we find.”
Margie sat silently, sipping on her tea, her head shooting left and right between them as though she were watching a ping-pong match. “You don’t think that they’ll be able to arrest him for it?”
Morgan sighed. “Probably not. Like Matthew said, they won’t be able to use the phone as evidence.”
“Where is it, Mom?” asked Tiffany. “Do you have it with you? Or did Matthew take it?”
“Oh no, I have it,” she said. “Matthew made it clear that he couldn’t be involved, for obvious reasons.”
Jade laughed. “This is crazy! I can’t believe we’re even discussing this.”
“Think about it though,” Morgan said. “I think I’d feel a little bit better if I knew it was just Eddie. He’s an idiot.”
“You know this guy?” Tiffany asked.
Margie nodded. “Everyone knows him. And he’s not what you’d call a criminal mastermind.”
“My vote is that we look,” Tiffany said.
Jade rubbed her face with her hands. “This is a bad idea.”
“I agree with Tiffany,” Morgan said. “Margie – you’re the tiebreaker. What do you think?”
She looked at all of the faces staring at her. Jade was right that it wasn’t a good idea – but what if this could put them at ease, once and for all?
Margie reached into her coat pocket and pulled out the phone. “Morgan, let’s see what you can do.”
“Yes!” she said, accepting the phone. She turned on the screen and immediately frowned.
“What’s wrong?” asked Tiffany.
“There’s a password on here. I can’t access anything.”
Margie leaned over to look at it. “Jade, can’t you do a computer trick thing to get past that?”
Jade laughed, shaking her head. “Not really. I’m not a hacker. I mean, I could have found his movement data if there wasn’t a password, but I don’t know how to get past it. And I’m not willing to try.”
“So all of my sneaking around and thievery was for nothing?” Margie let out a sigh. She really felt silly now. Why hadn’t she even checked if there was a password before she stole the thing?
“I wouldn’t say that…” Morgan stood up and put on her coat. “Let’s go pay Eddie a visit. Who’s with me?”
“Morgan – ” Jade began to protest, but Tiffany was already standing.
“Let’s go Mom!” said Tiffany. “I can’t wait to meet this Eddie character. Wait – do you think he’s dangerous or anything?”
Morgan laughed. “Absolutely not.”
After a moment of consideration, Margie added, “Probably not.”
The three of them stood there, looking at Jade. She finally let out a sigh and stood to get her coat. “For the record, I still think that this is a bad idea.”
“What’s the harm in asking him?” Morgan said. “And we’re all in it together!”
They drove up toward Roche Harbor and luckily it looked like Eddie was still working at the restaurant. Maybe he hadn’t even noticed that his phone was missing?
The four of them got out of the car and started walking towards him. At first, he didn’t see them – he was very involved in a piece of wood that he was measuring or cutting or something. When he finally looked up, he did a double take when he saw Jade.
The color faded from his face and in that moment, Margie knew all that she needed to know.
“Hey Eddie!” Morgan yelled. “Do you have a minute to talk?”
“Sorry ladies!” He called out. “I’m really busy here. Trying to catch up on some work.”
He tried to walk away, but Tiffany blocked his escape. “This won’t take long.”
Morgan pulled his phone out of her pocket. “Are you missing something?”
Eddie narrowed his eyes. “Is that my phone? I’ve been looking for that.”
“You should really be more careful about leaving it around,” she continued, “especially because it gave you away.”
“What’re you talking about?” He took a step closer to her.
Morgan tossed the phone over to Jade. “Oh, you know, just the fact that you have an app on your phone that you like to use for directions. Did you know that app tracks everywhere that you go and saves that information for all
