date!”

“Really? Are you sure that you’re not busy?”

“No! I think it’ll be fun. We can get dressed up!”

Jade wasn’t sure why her sister had so much free time all of a sudden, but she wasn’t going to question it. Not that Tiffany would tell her anyways.

“Okay! I don’t really have anything nice to wear but…I’ll give it my best shot!”

“What time do we need to leave?”

“I’d say we have about an hour before we need to catch the ferry.”

“Alright, then I need to get ready now.”

Jade laughed. “Oh, okay. How dressed up are you going to be?”

Tiffany flashed a smile but said nothing; she just ran off to her room without another word.

It would be good to have Tiffany on her side. She had a lot of experience with business and she’d already volunteered to join Jade’s makeshift committee. She was happy for the help, but she wasn’t sure how long her sister planned to stay on the island. Would she still be around when the vote happened?

Every time she asked her about it, Tiffany would brush it off. Once she gave the excuse that her vacation time was close to maxing out so she needed to take a few weeks. But then when Morgan asked her about it, she said she was on a sabbatical.

It was very unlike Tiffany to take time off – the most she ever took was a week to visit their mom, or a few days around Christmas. Though she always talked about how one day she’d like to visit Paris and London, she never had time. Work was too busy and too important to her. So why would she waste her free time on Jade’s silly little project?

Jade knew better than to keep asking questions, though. When – actually, if – Tiffany decided to tell her what was going on, it would be on her own terms. They were much closer now than when they were growing up, but Tiffany was still very much an older sister. She liked to keep her secrets.

About ten minutes before they needed to leave, Tiffany came back into Jade’s room.

“What do you think?” she asked, spinning around in a gorgeous green and gold dress.

“You look great.” Jade sighed, looking down at the skirt she’d chosen. She felt positively frumpy next to Tiffany – she just didn’t have as nice of a wardrobe. Or as much confidence. “This is the best I could come up with.”

“You look nice!” Tiffany said. “But if you don’t like your outfit, do you want to borrow something?”

Jade shook her head. “Oh – I don’t think that anything you have would fit.”

“What, you think it’d all be too big?”

Jade laughed. It was nice of her sister to pretend that she couldn’t see the extra jiggle in her step. “No – the opposite. It’d definitely be too small.”

Tiffany rolled her eyes. “Oh stop. I have the perfect dress for you. Hang on a second.”

She ran out of the room and returned with a form-fitting red dress. “I have this little golden belt too, which I think will be the perfect touch.”

Jade bit her lip. “I don’t know…”

“Just try it on! You don’t have to wear it.”

Jade accepted the dress and decided to give it a shot. She was surprised that it fit – it was definitely a bit more snug on her than it would be on Tiffany, but it didn’t look ridiculous or anything. And the belt was a nice touch – it made her look sharp. Professional, even.

“Okay, you can come back,” Jade called out once she had a moment to look at herself.

Tiffany opened the door and let out a little squeal. “You look awesome! Do you like it?”

“I think so. Do you think it’s okay?”

Tiffany nodded. “Definitely. You look great. That dress is made for you – you should keep it.”

“Tiffany! I’m not going to steal your clothes.”

She shrugged. “It’s not stealing if I give it to you. And I have so many dresses that I won’t need anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

“Oh,” Tiffany took a look at her watch. “We have to go, right?”

Jade startled when she saw how late it was. “Oh shoot – we do. C’mon!”

Luckily, the ferry was late and they were able to catch it without any issue. The trip was short and the entire time, Tiffany was cracking her up with stories about her coworkers.

They got off of the ferry on Lopez Island and were soon driving up Ferry Road, the lush green forest parting for
