delivered.
He looked over the cake and nodded his approval, then grabbed the box, carefully closing it, tying twine around it, and putting a label on the outside. Eli then picked the cake up and walked through the double doors to the cash register. When he reached the counter, though, it wasn’t Jack standing there.
"Hello," he said.
"Hello. I’m here to pick up the cake for the last name of Vaughn," The man said.
"Oh…I was expecting Jack," Eli said. Eli tried not to be too disappointed, but how could they talk when Jack wasn’t making himself available?
Okay, that wasn’t quite true. He’d been calling non-stop, but Eli figured face to face would be better. He’d even turned his phone off hoping that would cause the other man to come to the bakery.
"That’s my brother. I’m Colt. He wasn’t able to make it. He had to go into work for a couple of hours, so he gave me a copy of the order form." He produced the copy of the order, and Eli nodded. He rang it up in the register, all the while trying not to burst into tears. Jack couldn’t even show up? He couldn’t even come in so they could talk?
"Do you need anything else?" Eli asked, picking the cake box up and handing it over to Colt.
"Nope. This should be it. It looks great! Thank you!"
"Not a problem. Enjoy!"
Colt smiled and then turned around and left the bakery. Eli stood and watched him go. The day definitely didn’t play out as he’d hoped.
There was a part of him that thought he would be at the party with everyone. He sighed and put his phone back on.
Eli leaned back against the counter and stared off into space until he heard his phone ring. He glanced at it, but it was just Jace calling him. He let out a sigh, closing his eyes for a moment. He considered not answering… but, well, he needed someone to talk to.
"What?” Eli knew he sounded like an ass… but he didn’t care.
"I would take it personally, but I know I’m a delight to talk to and you’d never be mean to me." He could imagine Jace rolling his eyes, "Anyway, did Jack come and get the cake yet?"
"Nope." Eli bit his lips trying not to cry. "Jack didn’t come to get it at all. He sent his brother. If that doesn’t prove he wants nothing to do with me, then I don’t know what does."
"I think if he wanted nothing to do with you, then he would say…Eli…I want nothing to do with you,’" Jace pointed out. “He told you he had to leave for something at work. Besides, your crazy ass has been ignoring every one of his calls."
"Not ignoring. I just figured over the phone wasn’t the best way to explain.” Eli groaned. "He must think we’re done now because of that."
Jace chuckled. "Gods, so much drama. How did I not know you had this much drama." Jace sighed. “You’re really getting worked up when you just need to talk to him. Maybe you should go see him or something."
"He’s at work, I don’t know where that is." Eli nibbled at his bottom lip. "I am not going to show up at his workplace."
"You have a phone, right?" Jace asked. "You can search and find most people. All you have to do is give it a shot."
"They’re at the party today," Eli pointed out.
"Oh, yeah," Jace mumbled. "Then if not today, tomorrow or the next day. It doesn’t matter when you do it, goofball, just do it. Don’t give up, you know?"
"Okay, fine." Eli let out a long breath. "I’ll figure it out. I do want to talk to him, but I was hoping it’d be when I knew he was ready to talk to me."
Jace laughed. "He was ready last night. You’re the one who refused to answer. Now maybe he’s giving you space. Sometimes you can’t sit back and wait for someone to make the move. You need to make the move. Jack has shown you he wants you, and honestly he doesn’t seem like the guy that bails because you have a child."
Eli smiled. "When did you get to be an expert? You’d think that you had a relationship and were hiding it away from me."
"Nah!" Jace said, chuckling. "I just watch a lot of TV."
Eli laughed at that. "Right. Okay. Well, I’m bummed that he didn’t come to the bakery today. But you’re right, maybe I need to
