Rely on Me - Elizabeth Knox Page 0,46
at any moment. Gamble wouldn’t budge though, and I’m glad she didn’t. She knew a doctor out here at a new hospital they built a couple years back, her friend, Dr. Briggs Buffett. I don’t know much about the man, but considering he’s here with Gamble and Hart drinkin’ a beer around the campfire . . . I’d say he doesn’t mind hanging out with those less than him.
Ravage really stepped up when Gamble was dealing with Ace’s health. If roles were reversed, she could bet her ass we’d be in the hospital with our kids as well but considering she’s the only one with a child . . . well, you can put that shit together.
“Apparently she knows him from Baltimore.” Ravage states from beside me.
I turn to look at him, taking a sip of my own beer. “No shit. You serious?”
“You seem to forget I’m not the joking type.” Oh, how true he is. Ravage has always been the serious one of the bunch.
“What do you know about him?” I ask, shifting my eyes to Ravage and away from the scene before me.
“I know their parents were close. Sounds like Briggs’ mom and Gamble’s graduated high school together. Briggs is a couple years older than Gamble, but they grew up around each other’s family a lot.” The guy doesn’t look to be more than his mid-thirties. Hell, he’s probably not even that old.
“Did she know he was the doc?”
“No, I was with her when she went to the hospital. She was shocked, but overjoyed. I think she finally felt like she could trust someone here.”
“Don’t blame her. We need more friends. We’re the odd ones on the block.”
“What block? We’re in the middle of nowhere. Do you see any houses around us?” I turn back and forth. The only thing we have is a neighbor, and he’s at least six miles out. We now own all four corners of this intersection, meaning we have property for farming, housing, and even beachfront property. It’s nice because everything we own has lines of trees around the perimeter, ensuring we have even more privacy. Hell, Gamble just bought a restaurant ten minutes down the road. It was foreclosed on and the club bought it at a steal of eighty-grand. The goal is to get the area up and running a bit, so when people start developing here, we’ll be ahead of the game and the fruits of our loins will be prosperous.
“You understand my meaning. We’ve been here and nothing has happened . . . yet. I don’t like it, and it only means that the other shoe will drop shortly. I have a bad feeling, Mammoth. I have a very bad feeling.”
“You don’t get bad feelings, brother. What is it you aren’t telling me?” I question, paying close attention to the way he furrows his brows. He shifts his gaze on the ocean and takes a sip of his beer.
“I saw another club when I went on a run to Rehoboth earlier this week. Their patches said Lewes . . . and I’ve never heard of there being another club this close to us. It means they’re new, and they want our territory.”
“Do you have proof they do? Hell, they can stay on their side of the state and we’ll stay on ours.” We’ve had enough drama this year. One thing we don’t need is more, or for Ravage to get paranoid for no reason.
“You’ve never been one to be the optimist.”
“I’m turning a new leaf.”
Ravage scoffs. “Turn that leaf, but don’t be naïve. They noticed me and they were watching me like a hawk. I haven’t told Gamble yet, but I will be soon. In the meantime, I’m getting some information on them.”
“You get a good look at their cuts?”
Ravage glares at me. “Of course, I did.” Okay, well, I went and pissed him off. “They go by the Beasts of Brutality.” I’ve never heard of them.
“Is that supposed to mean something?”
Ravage stares at me blankly, blinking a couple times. He takes in a deep breath. “I’d heard whispers about them . . . and who they were prior, before they were the Beasts. However, I’m waiting on confirmation.”
“For once in your life can you just cut to the chase?”
“The Demons of Hell. The ones that didn’t patch into the Iron Vex and change their life around started their own club. That is, if they were some of the few who didn’t get killed. The Reapers and their allies went after all of them that they could.”
“Shit, you’re going pale at the thought.”
“I’m worried for our club, brother. We’re starting over, turning this new leaf as you said. We’ve all been through it this year and we don’t need to endure anything else for quite a while.”
“Yo, my brothers.” Holy shoves his big ol’ body between the two of us and wraps an arm around each of our necks. “Hell, why’re you two lookin’ so sad and shit. It’s time to party.”
“You’re really gonna act like we didn’t hear their entire conversation?” Viking, his brother, chastises him. They’re from the Charleston, West Virginia charter of the Royal Bastards. A couple of them wanted to know if they could come here to kick back and relax, so of course we let ‘em.
“Do you know anything about them?” Ravage asks Viking while he gets out from under Holy’s arm.
“I know enough,” Viking replies.
“Which is?” Now I’m the one inquiring.
“Stay outta their way ‘cause they’re as bad as they get.” Viking is straight and to the point unlike some people I know.
Ravage and I share a look. Both of us our worried now. While we’ve dealt with Konstantin and his crew, now it’s obvious we have someone else to be worried about. “I need more than that. Come inside with me so you can fill me in.”
“On one condition,” Viking responds.
“What do you want?” Ravage grumbles.
“Her,” Viking glances over to Electra who’s sitting at a picnic table with Needles and Sly.
Ravage smirks and nods. “A language I understand. I’ll make sure Electra keeps you company during your visit.”
Ravage and Viking walk off toward the small one room house that serves as our chapel. Meanwhile, Holy struts right up to Jugs. “Those things real?”
In typical Jugs fashion she lifts up her shirt, “What do you think?”
I chuckle lowly to myself and walk toward the water. This day would be perfect if my ol’ lady Riva was here. I just need to wait one more day until she’s back in my arms. I can’t wait to wrap my arms around her and feel her growing belly. It’s fucking insane to think that the first time I fucked her my little guys pushed their way through that condom to get to her. It must’ve been expired, or maybe it was thin . . . I don’t know, but I’m ready for our little girl to get here. I’m so ready to meet my princess.
