Prideful Savage (A Warrior's Redemption #1) - Miranda Bridges Page 0,17

what it takes. I’ll escort the female to the other side of the galaxy if it will keep her with me.

However, Ella does not move from her spot at the entrance. The moment I look at her, she averts her gaze. The safety warning on the back of the door now holds great interest to her as she does everything in her power not to acknowledge my existence.

“Why do you fear me, human?”

She snaps her head around and watches me approach through widened eyes. “I—I don’t fear you. I just don’t want you touching me is all.”

“Is that so? Then why does your pulse spike every time I look at you?” I place my hand by her head, deliberately caging her in, and bring my lips to her ear. Her breath hitches delectably. Such a sweet, innocent sound. “And your body heats when I stand near you? These are either signs of fear or desire. Which one is it?”

If just to see her reaction, I almost conclude my statement with the fact her arousal soars, too, in response to our proximity. This response is nothing new to me. As an Incarus, I’m well aware of the sexual desires we elicit in others. But it’s that I can smell this human’s cunt dripping her intoxicating nectar that’s driving me wild. The beast within me growls and prepares to lunge for her. With every scrap of willpower I possess, I hold him at bay. I will claim this female, and soon, but not when my brothers are about to join us. And not until I know if it will kill her tiny human body or not.

“In time, you will see I am not your enemy.” I ghost the side of her throat with my lips, just barely touching her, and I relish the erratic way in which her pulse thrashes. “All I want is to help you, Ella.”

“But why?” Her voice is scarcely above a whisper, almost a croak that’s caught in the depths of her throat. “You don’t even know anything about me other than my name. Why did you save me from Emji? I’m nothing to you.”

On the contrary, this female holds my fate in her hands and may be the only one who can relieve me of my affliction. That alone means she is everything to me.

I step back from her. “Because I want you for myself. I’m selfish that way.”

Her cheeks redden again. “But who says I want you?”

My gaze flicks over to the piloting section. “You don’t want me—yet—but I have reason to believe you need me.”

She slides past me and into the cockpit. “And what reason is that?”

I pivot on my heel and follow her with my gaze, my hands pressed to the compartment above my head. “Well, judging by the way you didn’t take the gun off the shelf by the door the moment we entered, you need my help. Perhaps you need a bodyguard. Perhaps you have another tracker hidden on your…person…for me to remove with my abilities. Or perhaps you lack the ability to pilot this little vessel and, having witnessed me fly my own, now want to ask for my help. Hmm?”

For a moment, she’s quiet. Crossing my arms over my chest, I stand directly between her and the entrance and wait for her reply. Instead she hurries over to a compartment hidden underneath the pilot chair. This female is as mysterious to me as she is alluring. There is clearly much more to her quiet nature than meets the eye, and every second she fights me, every word she withholds from me, makes me more determined to discover what she’s hiding.

Her fingers tap against some kind of screen built into the panel, then there’s a clicking noise followed by the sharp hiss of a door opening. The female unloads a metallic briefcase, which she places on the floor. Despite that she’s overshadowed by the chair, my height allows me to see over it and take stock of the equipment inside. I’m unable to decipher the device she activates with the tip of her thumb.

“What device is that?” I ask, nodding to the gadget.

She does not glance from it when she answers, “It’s a tablet.” Lifting the tablet into her hand, she straightens and turns toward the window with her arm outstretched. The device emits a green light, and then small pictograms swell from the screen. “Oh my God!”

I step forward, my hands clenched at the note of surprise in her voice.
