least she would until she saw my first fold job. Then I’d be relegated to some paper-pushing task instead. My friend was nothing if not predictable.

She leaned on the table, staring at the piles. “Just tell me there’s going to be a wedding. Justin loves me, right?”

“Yes, Justin loves you. There’s going to be a wedding. This is just a hiccup. You know how his family is. I’m sure he’ll be in touch as soon as he can.” I paused by her side. “Do you need to hug it out or something?”

“You’re kidding, right? I’m not that kind of girl.” She wiped the tears from her cheeks and pasted a fake grin on her face. “Let’s get crafting. Tell me about the investigation. What did Greg find out about the grieving husband and his side piece?”

I stepped around to my side of the table and poured myself a cup of coffee. Amy glared at me and I took a sip, then set it back on the counter. “I’ll drink over here, away from the totally washable napkins.”

“You mean dry-cleanable, don’t you?” Amy folded the first one, checking the way it looked in the ring. “Anyway, what’s going on with the couple at the restaurant?”

“Actually Greg didn’t say much. We had a few other things going on.” Everything had been moving so fast, I only knew it was Saturday because I didn’t have to work tomorrow, which made that Sunday.

“That’s odd. Or was he just bone-tired when he got home?”

I thought about the discussion. “He started to say something when he had to go corral Steve for trying to break down Esmeralda’s door.”

“OMG. Why didn’t you tell me this first? Is Greg all right? Is she?” Amy stared at me, the folded napkin fanning out as she let it set on the table.

“You were in a bit of a panic.” I sat down at the table and scooted my chair away from the napkins. “Sit down now and I’ll walk you through yesterday’s fun show.”

I went through everything, including a bit about talking to Toby. I didn’t tell the entire story there because betraying his confidence wasn’t on my agenda.

Amy eyed me as I finished. “You know Toby’s still hung up on Sasha, right? The bride who wasn’t a bride from Greg’s friend’s bachelor party called him and he blew her off.”

Now that I hadn’t known. I knew Jessica had been interested in Toby, but she was still technically in the grieving process. Or she should be since she lost her fiancé recently. “You mean Jessica? When did that happen?”

Amy shrugged. “A few weeks ago. He and Justin were out for a drink after work one Friday night and she called him. Toby blew it off like it wasn’t a big thing, but you know how bad he had it for Sasha. He was seeing white picket fences and everything.”

If I’d known about Jessica’s call, I wouldn’t have been so delicate about Sasha and her new guy. “Toby needs to start dating again. He’s a great catch. Someone’s out there waiting to be the right one.”

“Some hearts take longer to heal than others.” Amy glanced at the pile of napkins. “If I could do this whole thing over, Justin and I would have just eloped and sent out announcements. Do you know how much money we would have saved?”

“A lot.” I didn’t want to encourage her to talk about the wedding. “Look, this is going to be a special day for you and Justin. And if I complain about folding napkins again, just slap me.”

“I can’t. I’m much stronger than you are. I’ll break your jaw, then I won’t have a maid of honor. And no one can fit into your dress. I guess I’ll just have to be nice to you for a few more weeks.” Amy stood and filled a cup with coffee. “As long as you think there’s still going to be a wedding. Otherwise I’m taking off for Australia and doing some crazy surfing.”

“You know Justin would just come find you and drag you back.” I studied my friend. She was solid. She’d get through this.

She set down her cup on the counter. “Then we’d better get these napkins folded. I’ve got too much still to do for the wedding, and the mayor wants me to put together a Build Your Next Home in South Cove pamphlet to hand out at the St Patrick’s Day fair. Although I don’t think we need more businesses and there isn’t
