between his shoulders, probably so he could hide the vein in his neck that always pulsed when I pushed him.

"I could just stay home. I don't need a lot of bodies to writhe against. Just one." I licked my lips, and Diesel's face burned a bright red.

He stomped over the space he'd put between us and promptly shut the door.

My heart sang, and I would've jumped for joy if I didn't think it would just undo all the seducing I'd achieved so far.

"You made plans with your friends to go to the club. You're going to the club, Quinlan, after you change."

Were they my friends or his? I should have been the one to care about canceling on them, and honestly, Rick and Miles had recently added benefits to their relationship and would likely slink away to a corner and make out the moment we got in. Diesel shouldn't have been standing up for them anyway—he should be standing up for me! I was his mate. At least, that was what Rick had said.

My limbs shook as impatience turned into fury. If I wasn't his mate, then what was I doing saving myself for him?

"Be careful, Quinlan," Diesel warned, letting me know I'd once again spoken my thoughts.

I felt that soul-deep yearning to do exactly as he said exactly as he said it, but acting like that had done nothing but given me a perpetual case of blue balls. As Knox was fond of saying, it was time for Plan B. "No."

Diesel went still like a hunting predator that had caught sight of its prey. "No?"

"No. No, I'm not changing. And no, I'm not being careful! If you won't take me to the club dressed like this, then I'll find my own ride. I'm a mature, capable, reasonable adult after all!"

"Yeah, that's exactly what you sound like right now," he said drolly.

When I made for the door, Diesel's hand shot out and gripped my upper arm not so tight that it hurt, but tight enough that I felt his hand shake. "You aren't going anywhere, Quinlan," he growled.

My heart did backflips, and if my dick had been able, it would've joined in on the happy gymnastics. Yes, yes, yes, my soul chanted, glowing warm in my chest as Diesel leaned in, obliterating my personal space. He was going to kiss me, a real kiss, one that was an opening of events and not a closing. I'd finally find out what it was that my body ached for.

His hair fell forward, tickling my jaw as his gaze looked through my barriers to the essence of who I was.

"Quinlan," Diesel murmured, watching me lick my lips.

"Hm?"

"Call your friends. Tell them you aren't going to be able to go out tonight."

Oh shit, oh shit, this was happening. As always, Diesel's dominating behavior tickled every pleasure center that existed in my brain. "Why?"

Diesel exhaled. There was something off about the sound. It hadn't been a sexy gasp of anticipation, but a longsuffering sigh. A parental sort of sound. He straightened and locked the door before replying. "Because you're grounded."

The door to the room next to mine opened, wrenching me from my thoughts as Storri shuffled out with a baby on his hip. "Good morning, Quinlan." Storri's greeting would've been pleasant if it hadn't roused the sleeping man whose legs I stood between.

My wraiths came to my immediate aid, shoving him against the wall while simultaneously lifting me off the floor and back into the bedroom.

The thumping of Diesel's body hitting the wall scared the baby Storri held, making it cry, which prompted a low growl from inside Storri's room. Dog, the owner of the growl, stalked out on the defense. I remembered him from my time before the kidnapping. Somehow, he hadn't appeared in any of my nightmares, and I'd assumed him gone like everyone else. His square head turned toward my wraiths, and he sank low to the ground, his bristly hair stuck up in a tight ridge down his back.

Whooooo issssssss thissssss? They'd never sounded so excited. I landed softly on my feet in the doorway as my wraiths abandoned me, zooming toward Dog, shimmering from black to a glittery gray. They'd never done that before either.

The wraiths wound around Dog's midsection, making soft humming sounds that I didn't think Dog could hear. He didn't appreciate the sudden restraint, evident by the way he snapped at the air and scrambled out of the wraiths' grasps.

His wiggling maneuvers were no match for the
