One Big Mistake - Jennifer Youngblood Page 0,64

into the foyer. Hartley was surprised to see Madison in a red lace dress, holding a white basket full of rose petals. “You look beautiful,” Hartley smiled. “Thanks for being my flower girl.”

Madison nodded, a large grin curving her lips.

The wedding march sounded. Madison went before them, sprinkling rose petals. Tears shimmered in Hartley’s eyes as she and Knox walked down the aisle. Ramsey stood proud and tall, his brothers lined up beside him. He caught her eyes and gave her a smile so brilliant that it nearly took her breath away. She couldn’t believe this was happening! Hartley caught sight of her mom who was wearing an exuberant smile and dabbing at her eyes. Her sister and brother were there with their spouses. It was a glorious day.

Knox delivered her to Ramsey. He and Hartley took their place at the altar. Preacher Davis stood before them, holding a Bible.

Hartley gazed into Ramsey’s gray eyes. This is what heaven would be like, she decided. He looked impeccably handsome in a black tux. A lock of hair fell over his eye as he grinned. “You look incredible,” he murmured.

“Thanks,” she said appreciatively.

“Were you surprised?” he asked softly.

Laughter rose in her throat. “You could say that.”

His eyes danced with mischief. “I figured if you could ask me to marry you, then I could plan the wedding.”

Laughter gurgled in her throat. “About time you stepped up to the plate, superman,” she winked.

“Every day, for the rest of our lives.” His expression grew earnest. “I love you.”

“I love you back,” Hartley said, feeling like she was floating on a cloud of bliss. Despite the many accomplishments in her career, she felt like her life was just now beginning. This moment was the culmination of her deepest hopes and desires. To love and to be loved was the greatest gift of all.

Preacher Davis cleared his throat, signaling that it was time for the ceremony to begin.

“A private jet?” Hartley’s eyebrow slid up. “You pulled out all the stops.” The wedding had been followed by a small reception with only family where they’d eaten cake and taken their first dance as a married couple. Then, Ramsey announced that he was taking her to Maui on their honeymoon.

“I know a guy,” Ramsey boasted.

“Cash,” Hartley laughed.

“Yep.” Ramsey kicked back on the leather sofa and propped his feet on the coffee table. His eyes moved over her slowly, thoroughly in a way that quickened her blood. “I hope Ava followed my instructions and found you the skimpiest lingerie made.”

She hiccuped a startled laugh. Her thoughts went to the approaching honeymoon as a warm desire simmered through her. Ramsey seemed to be reading her thoughts as a sly smile tipped his lips. “Now, come ‘ere, darling,” he drawled in a country bumpkin voice “and let me suck your face.”

She giggled. “No way.”

He got partway up and reached for her hand, pulling her down with him. He pinned her to the couch shifting on top of her as he peered into her eyes. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” She slid her fingers into his hair. “Thank you,” she sighed, “for loving me.” A smile tugged at her lips. “You really are my superman.”

A wicked grin flitted over his lips. “And you really are my porcupine on fire.” He touched her hair.

“Really? You can’t come up with anything better than that?” she guffawed, swatting his chest.

A low chuckle sounded in his throat, and she could tell he loved getting a rise out of her.

The pilot announced that they’d be taking off soon when Ramsey’s phone buzzed. He raised up enough to pull it from his pocket. “It’s Cash. He probably wants to make sure we refill all the snacks we eat,” he joked. He put the phone to his ear. “Hey, bro.”

A second later, his face fell. He moved away from Hartley and sat up. “Oh, no,” he uttered, pushing a hand through his hair. “Where’s he now?”

Hartley’s heart seized. She placed a hand on Ramsey’s arm, her throat thickening with apprehension. “What’s wrong?” she asked when he hung up the phone.

His eyes met hers, and she winced at the pain and fear in them. “Jaxson was in a car accident.” His voice broke. “It happened on his way home from the reception.”
