body rising higher and higher, beyond words. All he made were sounds, whimpers and keens, high and needy. Lucan groaned, his body going tense, and then he flat out screamed as he jerked. His seed was hot inside Sando, and it sent him over the edge himself. He arched his back as he let go, his cock spurting his load all over the fresh bedsheets.

Maz’s thrusts were borderline violent now. Lucan’s slack body slammed into Sando’s, which was equally weak. One day, he wanted to be able to take that and let Maz go all out on him. One day, he’d be ready for that. And the idea that he had a lifetime to try everything he wanted with his men made him so happy he could cry.

Bray checked his little bag a last time, making sure it held extra ammo, food, a pair of shorts, and some emergency supplies. They all had a similar one, handmade by Sven, who had turned out to be quite handy with a needle and thread. He’d repurposed old backpacks into small bags they could wear in wolf form as a harness and could easily take off if they had to shift.

Dressed in just shorts, Bray was ready to go. They’d shift right off the bat, since they’d be much faster as wolves and much harder to spot. It almost felt like a flashback to the most horrible mission of his life, and Bray said as much to Ruari.

“It seems like a lifetime ago that Palani was dying,” Ruari said softly. “And at the same time like yesterday.”

Bray nodded. “I still have nightmares every now and then of him collapsing on the way back. The images of Enar and then Lidon carrying him will forever be burned into my brain.”

Ruari sought his arms, and Bray let go of the stuff he’d been checking to hold his mate. “I’m scared,” Ruari whispered.

Bray pulled him close. What could he tell him? He couldn’t lie and pretend everything was fine because it wasn’t. This mission was a hell of a lot more dangerous than the previous one because they had no idea what the situation in the city was. “I know. I’m scared too,” he finally said.

Ruari leaned back and met Bray’s eyes. “Are you?”

“Yes. Fear is healthy. It keeps you alert and on guard.”

Ruari nestled back against his chest. “Promise me you’ll come home safely.”

“I can’t, baby. As much as I want to, I can’t promise that.”

“He takes his promises very seriously,” Kean said. “He can’t make that guarantee, so he won’t. But he can promise us he’ll do his best.”

Bray opened his left arm, and Kean joined their embrace, laying his head on Bray’s shoulder. Bray stood with his men in his arms, Ruari’s cheek still resting against his chest. “Yes, that I can promise. You know I’ll do whatever I can to come back to you two and Jax.”

“And the baby…” Ruari whispered.

The baby? What was he talking about? Jax was eight months old, not really a baby anymore, and besides, Bray had mentioned Jax specifically. Then it hit him. “You’re pregnant?”

Ruari beamed. “I am. First time we tried and boom. That’s some fertile seed you’ve got there, alpha.”

Bray’s eyes grew wet. This time, he’d get to see Ruari pregnant, be there when the baby was born. “My god, baby… I’m so happy.”

He leaned in, and Ruari lifted his face in his sweet way, so full of trust. Bray kissed him tenderly. As soon as he let go of him, he turned to Kean. The beta was watching with a smile, but Bray didn’t miss the flash of sadness. Kean hid it as he too kissed Ruari and held him tight.

“It’s time,” Bray said. “Kean, will you walk me out?”

Kean looked surprised but nodded. “Sure.”

One last sweet kiss for Ruari and then Bray strode out, Kean on his heels. Bray waited until they were out of sight of Ruari, then held Kean back by his shoulder. “Kean…”

“What’s wrong?”

Bray curled his hand around Kean’s neck. “Don’t hide your feelings from me. From Ruari, yes, because he’d somehow blame himself. But not from me.”

For a second or two, Kean struggled, the emotions flashing over his face, but then he gave in. With a deep sigh, he stepped closer to Bray and put his head on Bray’s shoulder. “It hurts,” he whispered. “It hurts so fucking much.”

Bray held him tight. “I know. Actually, I don’t know because I can’t even imagine how it must feel for you,
