it in my own way, okay?”
She found herself nodding.
He squeezed her hand, his smile broadening. How about this? It’s Friday, so once we arrange to send off your nail polish, let’s go away for the weekend. Maybe somewhere warm. We could take a long weekend. Just you and me. No one else to distract us.”
“But Will said … I mean, I understood you have a board meeting on Monday.”
Kane frowned at the mention of Will’s name, but nodded. “Yes, of course.”
“And I probably won’t be able to get everything finished until this evening, and then I have to arrange shipping, so we wouldn’t be able to leave until late.”
His eyebrow arched. “Don’t you want to go away with me?”
She reached across the table and took his hand. “Of course I do. I’m just saying I don’t think it will work to go somewhere far. Maybe we could just spend the weekend here.”
“I have a better idea. Let’s go to the house. It has more space and a large backyard with a heated pool. And it’s away from everything.”
Everything being Will.
“I can’t imagine needing more space than here,” she said, smiling, “but it will be nice to have a change of scene.”
“Good, we can head over as soon as you’re done this evening.” He finished his last bite of food, and then stood up. He leaned in and kissed her, then disappeared through the doorway.
River finished her own breakfast, then cleared away the dishes and got right to work. In fact, she got into a groove and finished off the last hundred bottles of polish much faster than she thought she would. Of course, the idea of having Kane all to herself for an entire weekend was a great incentive.
She finished packing up the advance shipment for Rapture and arranged with the doorman to have a courier pick up the polishes. Then she decided she’d make good use of the credit card and contact numbers Kane had given her.

Kane got a late-afternoon text from River. He had intended to surprise her and show up at home early, then help her get her polish done and packed up so they could start their weekend sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, a meeting had come up and that plan had gone by the wayside.
He pulled out his phone.
Finished early. Meet me at the house around six?
He tapped in, Afraid it’ll be closer to seven.
Okay.
At seven-ten, he pulled into the driveway and stepped out of the car. He grabbed the bouquet of roses from the backseat and the bag of Chinese food he’d picked up, along with the cheesecake for dessert. He knew blueberry was her favorite.
He opened the door and stepped inside. A wonderful aroma filled the house. He walked into the living room. The table was set with fine china, crystal stemware, and candles. He walked into the kitchen to see everything in pristine condition. He noticed the oven light on, the temperature on low. But no sign of River.
He placed the food he’d brought in the fridge, then filled a glass vase with water and set the roses inside.
“Hi.”
He turned around at the soft, seductive tone of her voice. She stood in the doorway wearing a white satin robe that draped over her body in a way that showed every curve. A short robe that exposed her long, shapely legs. She wore white stockings with a thick band of lace at the top—they were the type that would stay up without garters—and high-heeled satin shoes with lace, sequins, and pearls. He recognized them as the shoes she’d worn at their wedding.
And the robe …
His groin tightened as he remembered what he’d bought to be covered by that robe.
She hadn’t worn his gift on their wedding night, and he’d assumed he would never see it on her. The fact that she’d brought it here … that she’d chosen to wear it for him …
She stepped forward and turned around, slowly. “Do you like it?”
“I liked it in the store. On you, I love it.”
He opened his arms and she stepped into them. His lips found hers and the feel of her mouth against his, her soft breasts pressed tight against his chest, sent his head spinning.
He breathed in the soft vanilla scent of her hair, intoxicated by her. Oh, God, he still couldn’t believe she was actually married to him. And with her wearing this outfit … Somehow it made him feel like she really wanted to be his wife.
His hands
