“Daddy wants me to call off the engagement, Tate. I need you to come home and talk to him.”

“Okay, you win.” I laughed. “You’ve gone and scared me now. When do you want me to come?”
“Next weekend?”
“I thought the party was the weekend after?”
“I won’t survive that long, Tate. Just bring a girl with you and Mom will leave you alone.”
“Rose, I don’t even have a girlfriend.”
“Well, you never have a girlfriend.” She sounded happier now. “You’re the biggest player I know, but I’m sure there are plenty of women that would love to come with you.”

“Is there no one you can think to bring, Tate?” She was getting whiny again. I loved my sister, but she was so annoying when she was trying to get her own way.
