To My Arrogant Boss (The Inappropriate Bachelors #2) - J. S. Cooper Page 0,14

smiled at her. “I’ll tell you everything. I guess I should start at the beginning.”

“Please do.”

“Though the ending is not going to be a happy one.”

“No happy ending?” Magnolia gave me a wicked grin. “Not even for five dollars?”

“Haha, you’re awful.” I shook my head at her, but couldn’t stop myself from laughing. “You’re starting to sound like Tate now.”

“Sorry, it’s probably because of Jagger.” She shook her head. “He’s so immature, and he’s such good friends with Tate. I swear I picked it up from them.”

“Aw, no worries.” I looked at my phone and the directions on Google Maps. “Ugh, we’re still a 35-minute walk away, do you want to catch an Uber?”

“No, let’s walk. I could do with the exercise.” Magnolia made a face. “And now you have no excuse to not tell me what happened.”

“As if I would make an excuse.” I laughed as I put my phone back into my handbag. “We’ll just keep walking up Bush and then we’ll turn right onto Fillmore.”

“Sounds good to me.”

“Okay, so you know how I got the first day wrong?” Magnolia nodded. “Well, I arrived at the office really early on Monday morning. I was really excited for my first day and my dad always used to say, if you’re early you’re on time, if you’re on time, you’re late, and if you’re late don’t even bother going because you’re showing you’re not a good employee. I guess I wanted to make a good first impression.”

“Oh, yeah, I’ve heard something like that before.” Magnolia smiled. “I try to be early as well.”

“Yeah, so I got there at 7 a.m.” I wrinkled my nose as I remembered that first day. I’d been so excited, so nervous, so full of hope. This was my first proper job in marketing and I’d wanted to make a good impression. In fact, I’d wanted to make the best impression. I’d worn my best navy suit with a white silk top that my best friend Violeta had sent me from Los Angeles. It was a little low cut, but I figured underneath my blazer it would be fine. I’d arrived at 7, coffee in hand. I’d expected to be there by myself, but there was a man waiting outside the main door as well. He’d been knocking on the door like he’d expected someone to answer.

“Hey, I think we’re early.” I walked over to the tall guy. He had short blond hair and blue eyes and was wearing jeans and a black t-shirt.

“Oh hey.” He blinked at me and smiled. “Can I help you?”

“You starting your first day at Cool Credit?”

“I guess you could say that.”

“Me too.” I grinned and gave him a little wave. “I’m Jane, I'll be working in marketing.”

“Oh, cool.” He nodded.

“What department are you?”

“I’ll be doing a bit of this and that.”

“Okay … What’s your name?”

“My name?” He cocked his head to the side and looked at me from head to toe. “Is this some sort of joke?”

“Joke?”

“Did Jagger send you?”

“Who?”

“I’m surprised he didn’t have you dress up in a uniform.” He laughed. “He knows I have a thing for uniforms.”

“Uhm, okay.”

“So, Jane, since we’re waiting on the big boss, should we go and grab breakfast?”

“Breakfast?” I shook my head. “No. I got here early for a reason.”

“So did I, but it looks like we’re not going to have any luck getting in until 9 a.m.” He shrugged. “Don’t worry, I’ll tell the boss that you were here early.”

I paused and looked at a captive Magnolia. “And then we went to breakfast.”

“Who was the guy?” She looked intrigued. “And why didn’t he show up on the second day? How did you both get the day wrong?”

“So many questions, Obi Wan Kenobi.” I laughed. “Sorry, my brother always says that to me when I ask him a lot of questions.”

“No worries. Your brother sounds cool. Will I get to meet him?”

“Yeah, most probably in a couple of months. I think he’s going to come into town.”

“Awesome, but back to the guy, what was his name and why didn’t he show up again? And how hot was he? And oh my God, did you have sex with him? Did Tate catch you with him?” Magnolia’s jaw dropped. “Tell me that did not happen.”

“That did not happen.” I shook my head. “It’s nothing like you’re thinking. Nothing at all.” I almost wanted to slap myself for how stupid I’d been on that first day. I’d almost blame myself if I didn’t get such great
