He stops the truck in the middle of the road and whips his stare over at me. “What?”
“I don’t need twenty-four hours to know what I’m feeling or thinking. I need you. I want you. I love you. Spend the rest of your life with me.” When he gapes at me, looking speechless and unsure, I lean in to kiss him. “I dare you.”
“You can’t do that.”
“I just did. I’m sorry I messed up your perfect proposal and that I made you doubt—”
“You don’t have to marry me to prove to Thom you’re over him. Your knee in his balls did it.”
“He deserved that, but he has nothing to do with the reason I’m saying yes. I want to marry you for you. Because you’re the other half of me.” I look into his dark eyes, willing him to understand and believe me, willing him to love me the way I see so clearly now I’ve loved him since almost the beginning. “Say yes. Please…”
He hesitates.
“If you don’t, I’ll have to double-dog dare you.”
He gives me a short, acidic laugh. “Well, that is serious. You must really mean it, then.”
“With every beat of my heart,” I assure him softly, then prop my chin on his shoulder. “You have a ring for me, don’t you?”
“Yeah.” He digs into his pocket. His hands are shaking as he reaches for mine and slips the simple white-gold band with the oval diamond on my finger. “You’re really going to marry me, honey?”
“Yes! Happily.” I’m so sublimely ecstatic, I beam a smile his way and press my lips to his.

Behind us, brakes screech and horns start honking. Trace tears his mouth away. “Shit.”
“We should probably get out of the middle of the road.”
“Yeah.” He presses his foot to the gas pedal and the truck lurches forward. “And I guess we should call everyone we know and give them the good news.”
“Starting with your brother and my best friend so they can keep Ranger tonight. He cocks his head. “You can’t use my own lines against me.”
“I just did. What do you say to that?”
