A Mermaid's Kiss (Bay State University #1) - Katie Holland Page 0,79
was one of the few we could see from the pool area. I was supposed to still be doing laps, but I swam to the edge where Major was. A minute later, two people in dress suits came into the building and went into the office. By this time we’d all stopped swimming and were watching the office. I was guessing that more than one of my teammates had received a nasty email ‘from’ him.
We all watched as one of the men handed his coach a stack of paper. He flipped through them and said something to Wes. I don’t know what it was but Wes lost it. He stood up and started yelling and flinging his arms around. The other man tried to calm him down, but Wes ended up punching him. The coach made a quick phone call and then took his turn at attempting to get Wes to sit down. The next thing we saw was Wes pick up a chair and throw it through the window.
“Nobody move,” Major said, and headed toward the office.
I watched Major enter the office and say something to Wes. Whatever he said seemed to enrage him and he launched himself at Major. I had no idea where Major had learned it, but in a matter of seconds, he had Wes on the floor in the hallway in some kind of wrestling move that appeared impossible for West to get out of.
Campus security guards were suddenly there. They handcuffed Wes and took him out of the building. The man who had been punched said something to Major and then shook his hand.
“Swimmers,” Coach Cross announced, “please make your way to the far end of the pool while we get this glass cleaned up.”
As soon as I got out of the pool, I went straight to Karma.
“Holy shit,” she said.
“No kidding. That was crazy.”
“At least everyone here saw his particular brand of crazy. There’s no way he’ll be allowed to stay in school now. I mean, he punched an administrator. I’m sure that’s automatic expulsion never mind the rest of it.”
I didn’t know what else to say. We watched them clean up the shattered glass. I know they were concerned about us cutting our feet so they took extra care in making sure they got every last piece.
Not surprisingly the rest of practice was canceled. We showered and changed. Major was just finishing up whatever he was doing with the administrators when we left the locker room.
“Can I take you beautiful women for some coffee?” he asked us.
“Definitely,” Karma answered.
Chapter 52
Major
We walked to one of our favorite coffee shops and sat down with our hot cups. I could tell Kayleigh was a little shaken up and I thought some caffeine and sugar might help her.
“So …” Kayleigh said taking a sip. “Where did you learn to do that wrestling move thing?”
“After everything that just happened, that’s what you want to know?” I asked. She nodded. “Okay fine. You’re not the only one with some self-defense skills. I took several martial arts growing up. One because I liked it, and two, because mom and dad insisted that I know what to do if anyone ever tried to kidnap me.”
I could see the look of shock on Kayleigh’s face. We had lived such different lives than what was normal for one of us was completely unusual for the other.
“How are you really feeling?” Karma asked her, changing the subject.
“I guess relieved. I didn’t want to have to run into him or be in a position where he somehow got me alone. His anger was disturbing.”
Karma snorted. “Disturbing. He’s batshit crazy.”
I had to agree with Karma.
“I don’t think you’ll have to worry about him again,” I told Kayleigh. “I’m sure he was taken to a secured area and will stay there until they get all of his stuff out of his room. He’ll be escorted off campus. I doubt you’ll ever have to see him again.”
“Good,” she said.
I wasn’t convinced she was telling us everything that was on her mind, but I let it go for now. We finished our coffee and headed out. An hour later, we were sitting in English like it was a normal day and I hoped that it was. I hoped for Kayleigh’s sake that the whole Wes thing was just going to be a bad memory.
Even though I was sure Wes wasn’t going to be a problem for Kayleigh I still didn’t leave her side all day. I wanted to
