A Mermaid's Kiss (Bay State University #1) - Katie Holland Page 0,64
times. He probably wondered if I was mentally stable today or not. Being on the swim team was my way to a college education. I wasn’t going to let anything or anyone get in the way of that.
We warmed up while we waited for the heats to begin. Karma and I both had our headphones on so we could get into our competition zone. As usual, I focused on the music and blocked everything else out. I was pumped and anxious to start competing.
By the end of the day, I’d had one of my best competitions and Coach Cross was really happy with me. I’d managed to get a lot of points for our team. Karma and I had finished showering and were just getting dressed, when another woman on my team addressed me.
“Hey Kayleigh, your boyfriend’s outside waiting for you,” she said.
“Huh? Who? I don’t have a boyfriend.”
“He just said to tell you that Major is waiting for you.”
“Oh, okay thanks,” I said. “What is he doing here?” I looked at Karma.
“Only one way to find out. Let’s go see what he wants,” she said.
We quickly finished getting dressed and left the locker room. Sure enough, Major was out there and Bodie was with him.
“Um hi?” I said. “What are you doing here Major?”
“I know who was messing with you. We figured it out last night.”
“We?” Bodie said with a smile.
“Fine. Bodie found the guy.”
I started to say something about Bodie knowing, but Major beat me to it.
“Bodie is a computer hacker from hell, Kayleigh. If we were going to track the link I needed Bodie to do it.”
“Kayleigh,” Bodie said, “you’re secret is safe with me. Besides, whatever this is between you two is making Major a better person.” He grinned at me while Major punched him on the arm.
“Anyway,” Major continued, “we know who it is.”
“The suspense is killing me,” Karma said. “Spit it out.”
“First, I need to talk to your coaches,” he said.
“Why?” I asked.
“I need to know if you can ride back with us, or you have to go on the bus.”
“Okay. Mine’s right over there,” I said, pointing out Coach Cross to him.
“I’ll be right back,” Major said.
Karma and I gave each other a confused look. We watched Major talk to my coach. It looked like it was taking some convincing to let us drive back with Major. A couple of minutes later, he was back.
“Your coach said it was okay if you rode back with us as long as we followed the bus and he’s going to pass on the message to your coach, Karma. Technically, the school is responsible for you until you get back to Bay State, but I was able to use my charm to allow you girls to ride with us. So are you two ready to go?”
We nodded. I was still unsure of what was going on. Why wouldn’t he just tell me? The four of us walked out to the parking lot and waited while Major moved his truck and parked it behind the bus. It was several minutes before the bus started moving and we followed them out.
“I can’t wait anymore,” I said, as we hit the highway. “What did you find out?”
“Bodie,” Major said, “show her what you found.”
“It took me most of the night to trace the source of the original link. It was well hidden in a lot of mess, but I finally found the person who created it. Here, see for yourself.”
Bodie handed me his laptop and I was shocked at what I saw on the screen.
“Wes?” I whispered.
“Let me see,” Karma said, so I turned it to show her. “That motherfucker. I’ll kill him.”
“You read my mind,” Major said.
“I owe you an apology, Major,” I told him.
“No, you don’t, Kayleigh. You had every reason to believe it was me since that’s how he made it look. If it weren’t for Bodie there’s no way I’d have been able to prove it to you.”
“I understand now why you waited to tell me until we were alone. I would have made a huge scene at the pool.”
“I would have ripped his balls off,” Karma said, making me smile and the boys wince. “What are we going to do about this?”
“Nothing for now,” Major said. Karma started to say something, but he stopped her. “We need to find the right way to handle this without any of us getting kicked out of school.”
“But what about other people reading the texts?” I asked. That was
