A Mermaid's Kiss (Bay State University #1) - Katie Holland Page 0,39

not many college students liked to get up early on Sunday morning and typically I would be one of the ones still sleeping. I guess when you don’t go to bed at 2 am, it’s easier to get up before noon.

It felt good to push my muscles to their limits today. When I was done with the weights I put my headphones in and hit the track. Running wasn’t my favorite, but it was good cardio. I was so focused on what I was listening to that I didn’t notice that someone was running beside me. I laughed when I saw it was Kayleigh. I took my headphones out so I could talk to her.

“Now who’s the stalker?” I asked.

“I’m learning from the best,” she said with a smile.

“How far do you usually run?” I asked.

“I don’t run for distance, but for time. I typically run for thirty minutes. It helps build my stamina for swimming.”

“So, you practice Monday to Saturday and run on Sunday. Do you ever take a day off?”

“Not very often. Swimming, especially at this level, is very competitive and I need to be at my best. If I lose my place on the team, I lose my scholarship.”

“Huh, well you certainly seem dedicated. Where’s Karma this morning?”

“I’m not sure. I think she hooked up with a new guy last night.”

“Does that bother you?” I asked.

“Why should it? She’s a big girl and makes her own choices. And as long as I don’t have to see strange naked men in my living room, I don’t care what she does.”

I laughed. “Has that happened?”

“Only once.”

We finished running and decided to go for coffee. We went to one of the places on campus that served pretty good coffee. We got our drinks and found a table to sit at.

As we were talking, I realized how easy it was to be around Kayleigh. There was no pressure. I didn’t have to worry about what she wanted from me, because she didn’t want anything-- but friendship and a little help with her sexual confidence. She was a beautiful woman and was going to make some guy really lucky one day.

“Tell me about your ex,” I asked.

“We started dating at the beginning of senior year. He was on the football team, so he understood why I practiced so much. We really didn’t get to see a lot of each other, until his season was over, and even then I spent so much time at the pool that we typically only had one date a week. We had fun together, though. I lost my virginity to him during Christmas break. I don’t regret it though, it was time.”

“How was the sex?” I don’t know why I was asking, but for some reason I was curious. It might explain more why she wanted my help.

“I used to think it was good, but now I’m realizing that it wasn’t all that great.”

“Did he make you come?”

“No.”

“Well, then he sucked,” I told her. “Did you break up because of bad sex?”

Kayleigh laughed at me. “No. He broke up with me when he found out about my scholarship to Bay State. He didn’t want to do the long distance thing.”

“How long ago was that?”

“About five months ago.”

“What a dick.”

Now it’s my turn,” she said. “Have you ever had a girlfriend?”

“Nope.”

“Why?”

“Just never wanted to get too serious I guess.”

“How old were you when you first had sex?”

“I was a freshman. She was a couple of years older than me, but taught me a lot. She’s actually the only person I’ve had regular sex with.”

“But you didn’t date her?”

“No. We met up a couple of times a week and just fucked.”

“I’m not judging you, but I just don’t understand. Karma is the same. No feelings, only sex. I just don’t think I can do that.”

“Why do you think that is?” I asked.

“I think it’s maybe because I have to feel comfortable with someone before I can have sex with them, and it’s hard for me to get to know people.”

“Guess what Kayleigh; we just had a conversation about sex and you didn’t blush the entire time.”

“I guess I’m making progress,” she said laughing.

“You hungry?” I asked, looking at the time.

“Yeah, I didn’t eat a real breakfast this morning.”

“What’s a real breakfast?”

“You know, actual food. Bacon, eggs, toast. I made a smoothie this morning.”

“A smoothie, yuck. You actually drink those things?”

“Yep, sometimes twice a day. I usually have one before practice. It gives me the fuel I need without weighing
