my teeth.

“And where in all of that babbling did you tell me what the exchange between you and Ichabod was?” I ask in a bored tone.

“’Almost like looking into a mirror,’” he snarls at me.

“Huh?” I ask, turning slightly to steal a glance at him.

“That’s what your fucking boyfriend said to me on the way out, and if you don’t believe me, then here.” He digs his phone out of his pocket and throws it in my lap missing my dick narrowly and I smirk. “Read it and weep, Pops. Looks like your guy there has his own secrets that you don’t even know about.”

Before I have a chance to tell him how full of shit I know he happens to be, Red’s hand darts across the way and retrieves the kid’s phone from where it landed between my legs. I roll my eyes at the interior roof when she uses the chance to let her fingers graze my dick. I’m no stranger to having chicks throw themselves at me, but she’s being too desperate for it.

That’s a no-go in my book.

I’ve never been a fan of nice and easy—I prefer to take what the fuck I want.

“Done copping your feel there, Daphne? Save some for his boyfriend. I’m sure he’ll be sad to know that Pops stepped out on him again,” the kid says cheerfully.

I lean over and backhand him in the face. He immediately looks shocked, then angry, and places a hand where I slapped him. Probably to ease the stinging sensation.

Not that I particularly give a shit.

I don’t care about the fucking barbs he takes at Red, but he’s gonna learn his place when it comes to me come hell or high water.

“Oops!” I say, mocking his cheerful tone. “Guess my hand slipped.”

“I hate you!” he shouts at me as he throws himself back against the seat like a toddler having a temper tantrum. And if that’s how he wants to behave, I’m not above belting him. But not right now. First, I have to set him straight.

“You know how I know you’re a fucking liar?” I ask, grinning at him maliciously through the rearview. “Because Ichabod doesn’t have a goddamn cell phone. There are no computers or fun little gadgets in my house that I don’t have control over. Not to mention, he knows what happens if he tries to get a little brave. Now, before you start up with your bullshit again, there’s a little something you need to know about me that your Mommy didn’t tell you.”

He pulls his legs up on the chair and keeps a hand on his face, refusing to look at me, but that’s okay. He doesn’t have to look—he only has to listen and understand.

“Anyone that ends up on my bad side usually doesn’t get very far. Like I said before, your whore of a mother probably slipped away when I was asleep, but long drives take it out of me sometimes, so that’s a mistake I can forgive myself for. What I didn’t expect though, was for that fucking mistake to show up on my door and expect me to immediately embrace it and give a shit about it. There are only a few people I give a shit about, and you know who’s at the top of that list? Not you. You’re not even at the bottom of the fucking list, and if you keep lying to me about things, then you’re more than likely going to end up at the top of another one of my favorite lists that you don’t want to be on. Make no mistake about it, kid—son or not—I’ll slit your fucking throat and leave you on the side of the road.”

I glance over at Red, the grin spreading over my face when I see how in awe she suddenly is of me.

But now they know the rules.

Blood or no blood, cross me and I’ll fucking take you down.

I turn my attention back toward the road in front of me and let out a heavy sigh before I reach for another smoke. And speaking of being crossed; here we fucking go again.

New Mexico. The Land of Enchantment.

I only ever cross state lines for one crazy bitch, and I’m not even sure how many years it’s been since I graced her doorstep with my presence, but I’m sure she’ll be excited.

“Come out, come out wherever you are,” I mumble under my breath as I press down on the gas pedal toward the first
