on the other side.

“What are you doing?” Mac asked with surprise, stopping half-in and pulling the shower curtain aside to peer at her with dismay. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you out of your shower. I just thought to join you.”

“It’s okay. I’m done,” she assured him. “You go ahead.”

“Won’t you stay and join me?”

His voice was a velvet growl, his smile sexy as hell, and CJ actually took a step toward him before catching herself. A weak breath slipping from her lips, she gave her head a shake to try to clear away the lust suddenly fogging it and said, “Hell, no. If I join you, we’ll end up back in bed and I have to be at the diner in twenty minutes.”

That was a guess. She didn’t have a handy clock or watch to check the time, and she suspected she hadn’t been in the shower that long, but her estimate was probably pretty close, and she had to move.

“I forgot about that,” Mac muttered, and then tugged the shower curtain closed and apparently went about taking his shower.

Grateful that he wasn’t going to be a distraction this morning, CJ quickly dried herself and pulled her clothes on. She was brushing the tangles out of her hair, in preparation to pull it back into a ponytail, when the water suddenly shut off and Mac pulled the shower curtain open. CJ cast a glance his way and then stilled, her eyes sliding over his naked, wet body. The man was beautiful. If he had a tan, he’d be perfect, but even without it he was an Adonis.

“Diner,” Mac reminded her, snatching a towel off the towel bar and quickly drying himself off as he walked out of the room.

CJ closed her mouth and inhaled another shaky breath as he took his perfect butt out of the room. Man, he was one potent mix of male, she thought as she returned to the effort to pull her hair back into a ponytail. But while her hands were working on her hair, her mind was in the other room with Mac. The bedroom where she’d had the most incredible sex of her life. CJ had thought her ex-husband, Billy, was a skilled lover. Honestly, she’d been pretty sure no one else could compare to Billy in that area, but Mac had surpassed him. The man had seemed to know just where to touch her, and exactly how much pressure to apply, what speed to use, the perfect angle . . . It was like he had a road map of her body and what she liked. It was mind-blowing. The man had given her such powerful orgasms she’d passed out, not once but every single time they’d—

“How are you doing in there? It’s a quarter to and it takes ten minutes to get to the diner,” Mac called out from the other room.

Cursing, CJ gave up her woolgathering, finished with her ponytail, and rushed out of the bathroom.

Mac was fully dressed when she entered the bedroom, wearing the jeans and black T-shirt he’d had on last night. He was also holding out her boots and purse.

“Thanks,” CJ muttered, taking them from him. As he turned and headed into the salon, she dropped to sit on the end of the bed to tug the boots onto her bare feet. CJ knew it was a mistake even as she did it. Wearing the boots without socks would surely give her blisters. It wouldn’t do much for the boots either to have her feet sweating in them all day, but she didn’t have time to stop and look for socks so she yanked them on, stood, and headed into the salon where Mac was already waiting with the door open.

“Thank you,” she murmured again as he ushered her out of the room.

CJ didn’t bother to lock the door, but hurried to the stairs and rushed down them to the main floor.

“Morning, dears,” Mrs. Vesper called as she rushed past the kitchen.

“Morning, Mrs. Vesper. I’m late. I’ll see you later,” CJ called out, hurtling toward the back door.

“Where are we going?”

CJ glanced around at that question in time to see Decker leading Bricker out of the kitchen to join Mac behind her as he answered, “CJ has to go to the diner.”

“Right. The mob last night,” Decker said with a nod as CJ pushed through the door and hurried across the porch.

“You guys don’t have to come with me. I’m good,” she told
