mind, let me know.” With that, she left the room.
“I think we shocked her,” Owen murmured. “You might have to make an honest man out of me.”
That surprised a laugh from her. “Don’t worry. I’ll protect your reputation.”
“Hey, I’ll enjoy being known as yours and want the men in Archer to know you’re mine.” He kissed her temple. “Rest while you can. I have a feeling Dr. Cruz will do his rounds early.”
Owen’s prediction proved to be true. Caleb knocked on the door at 7:00 and peered around the door frame. “Dr. Cruz is here.” His eyebrows winged up when he saw Gigi in Owen’s arms. A slow smile curved his mouth. “It’s about time.”
“Shut up, bro,” Owen muttered. “Send in the doctor so G can get out of here.”
With a chuckle, Caleb returned to the corridor. A moment later, the doctor walked in. “Ms. Warren, I’m Dr. Cruz. If your friend will step into the hall, I’ll take a look at you. If things are like I hope, you’ll be able to go to breakfast with your friend.”
Owen tipped up Gigi’s chin and gave her a light kiss. “I’ll be right outside.”
After Owen left, Dr. Cruz approached Gigi. “Is that your boyfriend?”
She started to deny it, then remembered the change in their relationship. “Yes.”
“He seems very protective.”
Gigi smiled. “He’s a cop. Protectiveness is in his genes.”
A few minutes later, the doctor slid his hands into his pockets. “Your CT scan came back fine. You’re free to go as soon as the nurse brings your discharge forms. Expect headaches and soreness for a few days. No driving for 48 hours.”
She sighed. “No problem. I don’t have a vehicle to drive at the moment.” She dreaded dealing with the insurance company and searching for another vehicle. “Thank you, Dr. Cruz.”
“Yes, ma’am. Rest a few days, then you can resume your normal activities. Follow your discharge instructions. If your symptoms grow worse, come back here or go to your family doctor.”
After he left, Owen returned. “What did he say?”
“I’m free to go as soon as the nurse returns with my instructions.”
His eyebrows rose in silent question.
Gigi’s lips curved. Her Marine was a smart man. “Dr. Cruz said no driving for 48 hours and to rest a few days.”
A brisk knock sounded on the door and Jessica returned with papers in her hand. “You’re all set, Ms. Warren. Dr. Cruz left instructions for you.” She handed over a clipboard and a pen. “Sign the bottom of the page, and you’re free to go.”
As soon as Gigi returned the clipboard, Jessica gave her a sunny smile, wished her well, and left the room.
“Ready to leave?” Owen asked as he slid her shoes on her feet.
She nodded. “Don’t I have to wait for the orderly to wheel me out?”
“You have proof of your parole. I say we leave before the orderly shows up.”
“Sounds good to me.” Gigi slid off the bed and stood. She gasped as waves of pain rolled over her and swayed.
Owen’s muscular arm wrapped around her waist. “Easy, G.”
Gigi sucked in a few deep breaths. When the pain eased off a fraction, she straightened. “Let’s go. My guests will be waking soon.”
“Emma and David took care of breakfast.”
“She’s an angel.”
He grinned. “I’m glad you didn’t say the same about my brother. I would have been forced to point out his many flaws.”
Gigi laughed. “Many?”
“Oh, yeah. More than you could possibly imagine.”
“What about you?” she asked as he walked with her toward the door. “Do you have flaws?”
“A couple.”
“Care to tell me what they are?”
He slid her a teasing glance. “That’s for you to discover for yourself.”
“I could ask one of your brothers. I’m sure they’d be happy to spill your faults.”
“That’s cheating, Virginia May Warren. Figure out my flaws for yourself.”
Gigi grinned. This could be a lot of fun.
Her smile faded when she saw Caleb standing by the door and she remembered why he was there. She walked into the hall with Owen. “Any news about Toni?”
“Not yet.” He tightened his hold on her. “We’re doing all we can.”
Would it be enough to save Toni and her baby?
CHAPTER SIX
Owen followed Gigi into the kitchen of her B & B. His brother, David, turned from the coffee pot, his gaze assessing Gigi.
“Gigi.” Emma hurried across the kitchen and hugged her friend. “How are you?”
“Not ready to run a marathon.” She patted Emma’s back. “Thanks for taking over here. I owe you big for this. If Faith wasn’t out of town this week, I
