The Man I Thought I Loved (Two-Faced #2) - E. L. Todd Page 0,67
up for almost a year.”
She sighed again. “If I were over him, I guess that would be a valid argument, but I’m not.”
“Yeah…”
She straightened and grabbed the muffin again and started to pick at it. The conversation seemed to be over, based on the way she kept her gaze averted as she ate.
“We were going to out on Friday. You want to come?”
“Everyone?”
I nodded.
“Yeah…that’s fine. You guys mean a lot to me, and I don’t want to lose you because of this.”
“You could never lose us, Kat.” Unless she was the one to walk away.
“Alright, so tell me what’s going on with Dax.”
“Just fuck him already.” Matt walked beside me as we headed to the gym to play our weekly sport. “Do you have any idea how hot he is? How do you restrain yourself when he smiles like that?”
“Trust me, I know. I’ve already fucked him.”
“Then it’s even more shocking that you’re holding back.”
“It’ll happen when it’s meant to happen.”
“How long has it been?”
“Couple weeks.”
He shook his head. “The guy is a saint. So, what’s going on with Kat?”
I shook my head. “Haven’t gotten anywhere with her, but she’s coming out with us on Friday night.”
“They’ve been broken up a long time. She should be over it.”
“Don’t be a dick, Matt.”
“What?” he asked incredulously.
“You don’t know what it’s like to be in love and then get dumped.”
“True. But how are you going to change her mind?”
I started to wonder if the only option was to tell her the truth…that Charlie ended their relationship because Denise was the one he really wanted. It would explain why she needed to let this happen, but it would also kill her. “Not sure.”
We entered the gym and saw Charlie there—with Denise.
They sat together on the bench, talking while the guys warmed up on the court. He was shirtless and drinking from his water bottle. She was in skintight black jeans with brown booties and a sweater, her hair in curls down her chest, bracelets on her wrist.
“Hopefully, Kat gets on board soon,” Matt said. “Because it looks like it might happen whether she’s ready or not.”
I didn’t even look at the court because I was more focused on the two of them, close together and engaged in conversation. He said something to make her laugh, and she touched his arm, which seemed innocent, but since I was aware of her attraction, I knew it was anything but.
I took a seat beside Charlie on the bench. “Ready for this?”
He turned to me, a guilty look in his eyes like he knew what I was really thinking. We were connected like that, so it was easy to read his mind. “Yeah.”
“I didn’t know you were coming.” I leaned forward and looked at Denise.
“Charlie invited me,” Denise said. “Since there’s pizza and beer afterward, I couldn’t say no. Plus, all the hot shirtless guys on the court.”
“That better not include Dax.”
Denise smiled. “Sis, he’s all yours.”
Dax had walked up and embraced Charlie. After Charlie jogged onto the court, Dax stood over me. “Get your ass up, sweetheart.”
I recognized the playfulness in his tone, but also the subtle offense because I hadn’t gone out of my way to greet him like I usually did. I set my stuff down and got to my feet, having to tilt my chin back to look at him. “Hey…” The second I looked into his face, I forgot about the dilemma playing out right in front of me. My hands moved around his waist, and I rose onto my tiptoes to kiss him.
His powerful arms tugged me against his hard body, and he kissed me hard, as if he didn’t care that my sister was right there. Like always, his hand snaked to my ass and gave one cheek a tight squeeze. “That’s better.” He pulled away and brushed his nose against mine. “What did I tell you?”
I cocked an eyebrow, not following his question.
He grinned, arrogance in his eyes. “I heard what you said, sweetheart. Would you like me to keep my shirt on?”
I rolled my eyes and gave a good-natured shove into his chest so I could walk away and onto the court.
He grabbed me by the wrist and tugged me back, his hand capturing my ponytail and forcing my head back so he could press another kiss to my mouth, this one even more aggressive than the last.
Then he abruptly released me, walking back on the court like nothing happened.
