Mafia's Final Play (Mafia's Obsession #3) - Summer Cooper Page 0,61

other side of the car. Anton was on a burner phone, calling the fire department and reporting shots fired as well.

Matteo climbed into the car, pain creasing his face.

“What’s wrong? Did they get you?” Marie’s voice quavered, but he just shut the door and took a deep breath. “Matteo?”

He put his hands calmly on the steering wheel, put the keys in the ignition, and started the SUV as more shots pinged off the body of the car. “We have to get out of here.”

“Matteo, are you shot?” she demanded to know as he gritted his teeth, hit the switch on the gate, and put the car into gear.

“It’s just a graze, baby, nothing more. Put your seatbelt on.” He pushed down the accelerator and they were off just as the sounds of the police and fire trucks started to come up the mountain faintly. Matteo looked behind him at the red and white glow of the lightbars on the trucks as he sped by them a few minutes later, but he didn’t see a vehicle following their car.

“I think whoever it was must be on foot, there’s no car following us.” He grunted with pain before he went on. “They must have walked up. “Fuck, what the hell happened?”

He turned to look back at Anton before he switched his gaze back to the road.

“The power went off earlier and I couldn’t get the generator running. It’s been so quiet…” Anton stated, but Marie interrupted.

“I told him to leave it until the morning. I had a feeling it wasn’t going to start, and we had the fires. I never thought about it killing the floodlights or the security cameras. It’s my fault.”

“No, the one to blame is the one that paid for this shit. That’s who’s at fault, not you two.” Matteo drove down the mountain carefully, aware that they could still be in danger, but needing to be safe.

She’d seen a few spots of black ice on the road and knew his mission now, as always, was to keep her safe. She felt terrible that he was in danger because of her.

“How is your leg?” she asked because she couldn’t see the leg that had been shot. It was his left leg and out of her line of sight.

“It’s okay, but it burns. Just a graze, babe, don’t worry.” He patted her hand then put his hand back on the steering wheel.

“Where are we going? Shouldn’t we talk to the fire department, the cops?” Marie asked, but Matteo didn’t look at her.

“We don’t call the cops in our world, Marie. We just don’t.” He gripped the steering wheel harder and drove onto the main highway that bypassed the town and headed north.

“Okay, I accept that. But where are we going?” She was nervous, scared, and she saw that he understood that. They were all tired, they’d just been woken up in the middle of the night with the house on fire and someone had shot at them.

“I didn’t see any of them, did you, Anton? All I heard was shots, then my leg was on fire. They hit me, which means whoever has paid for the contract doesn’t care who is killed, as long as Marie is taken out. Fucking hell.”

She felt even worse now, she thought, and let her head fall down to the window. That was when she noticed they were still in their nightclothes.

“Do you two have your passports with you?” he asked. She knew they did, it had been something he and Anton had discussed before they left New York and he’d made sure she brought hers with her. He must want to be sure Anton had his.

“Yes,” Anton and Marie replied, but neither sounded enthusiastic right now.

He saw a rest stop and pulled in there to change into the clothes they’d dropped last night into the hamper in their bedroom. She wasn’t happy about changing in the car, but it was better than going into a cold, empty, too brightly lit public bathroom at this hour. She hurriedly changed while Anton inspected the car where it had taken shots.

Matteo called him back in when they were dressed in jeans and sweatshirts again. He’d wrapped a length of bandage from a first aid kit Marie found in the glove box around his leg. It wasn’t much, a graze, but it was still bleeding a little. Hopefully, it would stop soon, she thought as Anton got back into the car.

“Right then, we’re going to Canada,” he said
