Mafia King (Young Irish Rebels #2) - Vi Carter Page 0,55

the moment in the hall that I don’t want to remember. Tears burn my eyes without my permission.

Wet droplets touch my cheeks as I continue to drink from the glass, and my body grows heavier.

The thud on the floor feels distant. I know it’s the glass as my hand feels empty now. But I don’t care. I want to go where my body is pulling me into a sleep that will scare away all the thoughts I don’t want to face.

I sleep for a while. The smell of his cologne wraps around me, and at first, I want it to vanish. It’s making me remember, and I don’t want to remember.

“Shhh.” His breath brushes my face, that’s resting against his bare chest. His heart drums away under my ear.

“I don’t…” my lips feel dry, and I lick them.

We are moving, and my eyelids flutter open. He’s focused ahead as he carries me through the hall. I push against him, but nothing happens.

My eyelids flutter closed, and the loss of control sends panic fluttering through my body.

“Bastard.” I manage to squeeze out.

The rumble in his chest has me opening my eyes again.

“Are you laughing?” I’m waking up, the walls spin, and I quickly close my eyes again.

The rumble leaves his chest, and his heart resumes its normal beat.

“I can hear your heartbeat,” I speak with my eyes closed. “I didn’t think you had one.”

I’m lowered, and my eyes snap open. Where am I? I’m looking around at the darkened room. The sheets under me are silk.

“I’m not having sex with you.” I’m trying to get off the bed. His arm circled my waist as he drags me back towards the pillows. My head sinks into them.

“I don’t have sex where I sleep.” He shifts beside me.

“So what, you bring women here just to sleep?” I sneer and glance at him, hating him for looking like a god or a king beside me.

“I don’t bring anyone here.”

My chest tightens. “Do you really think I’m that gullible?”

He pulls the silken sheets over me. I smell him. It’s all him that surrounds me. Shay sinks down on the pillows too.

“Go to sleep.” His command has me opening my eyes, and I face him.

My stomach squirms; I shouldn’t face him. He had no right to look like this after what he did to me.

“Was it bad?” I ask, sounding like a pitiful creature. I close my eyes tightly. “Don't answer that.” My cheeks burn, and I want another drink.

My lids snap open when his large hand touches my cheek. His dark eyes roam across my face, sending my heart into a frantic rhythm.

“I’m a bastard.” He removes his hand, and I seek the warmth immediately.

“Yeah, you are.” Tears blur my vision.

“You’re too good for me.”

“Yeah, I am.” I blink, and Shay’s face comes back into focus. A grin on his lips has me tightening my legs together. I’m naked under the robe, and my body is so aware of his closeness.

“Go to sleep now.”

“No,” I say, even as my eyelids grow heavy with the command. “I hate you,” I mumble as my mind fogs over.

“Hold on to that hate.” His stupid words are the last thing I hear as I fall asleep.

I wake up for the first time feeling rested. As I stretch, the pain in my head and in-between my legs come to life, and I stop as I’m assaulted with everything that happened since I arrived here.

I sit up and look to my left. I’m alone. Of course, I am. I allow my head to fall into my hands. I shouldn’t have stayed here last night. I should have fought him.

The bedroom door opens, and I look up. Shay’s still topless, wearing only black pajama bottoms.

“Where is my knife?” The moment I ask it, I glance at his hand that’s wrapped in a bandage.

“In the bedside table.” He answers while carrying a tray towards the bed.

I ignore him and scurry across the large bed until I reach the bedside table. I open the drawer and am surprised to see my knife there.

“You don’t need the knife, Emma.” Shay sounds exasperated. I take it out and sit back as he places the tray at the foot of the bed.

I don’t release the knife as he flicks on some lights. The room is lit up, and I see him even more clearly now. I wince as the pain in my head throbs. I pull the robe closer to my body.

“These will help.”
