I knocked on Dr. Crow’s door. There was only one reason the chief of staff would have called me to his office today.

The promotion.

I ran my hand across my hair, patting it back down into position. After any crazy-long shift, my hair always bore the brunt of the action and stress, making me look more like Einstein than a capable and calm medical doctor.

“Come in.” I’d miss his deep melodic voice when he retired.

I wouldn’t miss not being the boss, though, so losing that voice was a trade-off I was definitely willing to make.

Stepping into the office, I tried for a humble expression. Or anything that wasn’t obvious excitement at the man’s retirement.

“Kairo.” He stood and offered me his hand, his usual friendly grin in place on his face.

I’d miss him—he’d always been available to offer advice or support and I trusted his decision making. He was definitely my role model for how I’d handle the role, even if I made a few changes here and there to add a slightly more modern flavor to the way we worked.

I shook his hand, my grip firm, that of an equal. “Dr. Crow.”

He laughed. “Please. It might as well be Jerry after all these years.
