and knew that she was home.
She gasped as his teeth retracted from her throat. She was back in their bedroom, her body slick with sweat and his seed as he slid from inside her. He pulled her against his chest and held her there, kissing her forehead. She felt his heart under her cheek and knew that it belonged to her. It beat to the same rhythm as her own.
She slept together with Dylan in the utter contentment of that space, of their bond, of their life, and their family.
When she woke to the sound of Dawn crying, the light was shining through the window. She hurried to take care of her baby, with one last look at her sleeping mate in the bed. She sat in the nursery rocking chair, feeding her child.
Later that afternoon, they piled into the car and drove over to his brother’s house. Austin had planned a homecoming party with the whole family. Dylan had prepared a Jell-O mold the night before to bring to the barbecue. She carried the Jell-O while Dylan carried the car seat with Dawn inside. As they walked toward the picnic tables under the big willow tree, Shane and Montana had already arrived.
“My publisher loves the novel, Dylan. They just emailed me this morning. They're offering me a huge advance.”
“That's excellent news,” Dylan said.
“I wouldn't have been able to do it without you. I want you to have half the advance and a portion of the royalties.”
“I was happy to help. You don't owe me anything.”
“Nonsense,” Shane said as Dylan took Dawn out of the car seat and handed her to Montana, whose arms were outstretched and waiting to hold her niece.
“They want this to be a series. So, I'm going to need your help with the next one.”
“That's great news,” Dylan said.
“But you have to take the advance and the royalties,” Shane insisted.
“Done,” Dylan said.
Annie was so proud of her mate that her heart swelled with pride as she watched Montana rock Dawn in her arms.
“She has your eyes,” Montana said.
Annie sat beside Montana on a comfortable patio couch as the other Wildes arrived at Austin's house. Cheyenne came out of the house with her toddler and her new baby in a sling on her chest. They joined Montana and Annie on the couch, and Annie held her nephew on her lap. The next to arrive were Gunner and Cassidy.
“With all the babies around,” Cassidy said, pulling up a chair next to Gunner. “Gunner and I have decided to design a children's line of clothes.”
“That is such a good idea,” Cheyenne said.
As Gunner and Cassidy passed around their sketchbook with designs of baby clothes, the twins Cal and Cash arrived with their mate River and her dog Boo. The twins helped Austin at the grill while Annie brought the dog over for the toddler to pet. River was showing a baby bump of her own.
Next, Heath and Rose, along with their own toddler, joined the group of mothers and babies on the grass. The children played with the dog while the potluck grew on a side table. When everyone had arrived, they all gathered around the big, long picnic table. The babies were in high chairs and on people's laps. As the bottles of wine and beer were opened and the plates of food were passed around, everyone heaped up their portions.
Austin offered a toast to the new couple. “To Annie and Dylan. Welcome to the family. We are glad to have you home.”
“Hear! Hear!” everyone cheered.
They ate, talked, and laughed.
“The office manager is doing well. But we could really use your expertise back in the warehouse, Dylan,” Austin said.
“I'm happy to return and oversee the warehouse. I've been itching to get back to work.”
“But he has a commitment to edit my books from now on,” Shane said.
“I'm not forgetting that,” Dylan said.
“I've been looking at your website and social media presence,” Annie said. “I think that you’ve done a great job. But there are so many things that you could do to increase your visibility and efficiency.”
Everyone looked at Annie with interest.
“I am a social media manager. It's what I do.”
“I'd love to hear about your ideas,” Austin said. “Why don't you come over tomorrow morning, and we can talk about it?”
“Can you look at our branding too?” Cassidy said.
“I'd love to,” she said.
Sitting with the Wildes at the picnic table as the bright sun shone down warm and soft in the eastern sky, she looked over at her baby, Dawn. Her heart swelled with happiness. She couldn't believe that less than a year ago, she'd run away from this happy life. But now that she had her home, her people, and her family, Annie knew that she would never be alone again.
