Knox (The Boundarylands #12) - Callie Rhodes Page 0,49

rumbled with possessive pride, knowing that inside Josie was safely tucked in his bed sleeping off her exhaustion, wearing a matching bite of her own.

Knox rested his head against the carved wood chair back and let out a deep, contented sigh. Though Josie's heat had been powerfully erotic, it had also been physically demanding, and it was nice to have a moment of rest.

He had been tempted to stay in bed with his omega—damn, he liked the sound of that—but instead, he'd risen the moment she'd drifted off. After coming through her first heat, the only thing she needed was rest—but Knox had a job to do. Several of them, actually.

There was the broken window to fix, dishes to wash, laundry to do…all the little tasks that would restore his neglected cabin to order. Given that he'd been wallowing in his own filth and sadness for the past month and a half, it had taken all day to put the place to rights, but Knox wasn't about to let Josie wake up to a mess.

He wasn't ashamed of his behavior after she left, but that didn't mean that he wanted Josie to know that watching her walk away had nearly ripped the heart right out of his chest.

And she was too smart not to connect the dots.

It would only take her a second to figure out exactly why he hadn't gotten around to replacing the broken window or tackling the growing pile of dirty dishes. She'd know in an instant that the demons he'd tried to outrun had caught up with him. That none of his old tricks for numbing his loneliness—fighting, boozing, taking stupid risks—had managed to dull the pain.

But all of that was in the past.

The second Knox had laid Josie down on his bed, he'd become a new man. One who didn't care if he ever saw the inside of the roadhouse again. It was a small price to pay for the deep sense of contentment he felt in his heart right now—the knowledge that Josie had come back to him, choosing him over life in the beta world.

"Damn it."

Knox turned his head at the sound of the soft curse that was accompanied by creaking floorboards. Why in the world was that woman to get out of bed? It was much too early for that. Even though she'd had a solid twelve hours of rest, Josie hadn't eaten anything since Tuesday.

Knox rushed inside and found her holding onto the side of the bed, legs shaking, as she fought to stay upright.

"You're going to fall on your ass." Knox swept her into her arms, planning to lay her back down on the mattress again, but when she snuggled into the curve of his shoulder, he changed his mind.

"I was sick of being in bed. And I'm used to doing whatever I want whenever I want."

Knox knew the feeling. It was something they were both going to have to get used to. "What was it that you wanted to do?"

"Maybe take a bath?"

Knox gave a wicked growl. Now that was a request he could honor. "I'm more than happy to help you with that."

Josie shot him a playful glare. "That's what I was afraid of."

"Afraid?" Knox raised an eyebrow in mock confusion. "What in the world do you have to be afraid of?"

"That once you get me naked in all that warm water, you're never going to let me get out of it."

"I'm still not grasping the 'afraid' part."

"It's just that I was hoping to get out of the house after I clean up. Maybe we could go down to the roadhouse for a couple of beers."

Now Knox's surprise was genuine. "You…want to go down to the bar?"

"Sure. Where do you think I spent my downtime when I was beta?"

This was apparently the one thing they hadn't talked about in all their hours of conversation. "I just assumed that you didn't—that you weren't—"

"That I was a stick in the mud?" Josie grinned. "Guess you have a lot to learn about me. Also, I happen to know for a fact that there's a fresh shipment of good stuff down there."

"The bootlegger told you that?" Knox was warming to the idea…but it would have to wait a little longer. His beautiful omega was still too weak and exhausted for a night out. "Maybe tomorrow night."

"Tomorrow?" Josie gazed up at him with the sparkling emerald eyes he'd never have to do without again.

"That's right, sugar," he said, pulling her closer for a searing kiss. "We've already got plans for tonight."
