we trust you to know what’s right for yourself, honey,” my mom adds.
“Thank you, guys,” I say. My heart is almost overwhelmed with the love I’m feeling right now.
We sit down and order, and I look over at Grant who is scanning at the menu.
“Oh my gosh, I almost forgot,” I say, “This is my boyfriend Grant.”
“Oh, we’ve got his interview questions ready for him once we start our meal. But Mom and Dad have some news,” Paul says.
My parents look at each other, smile, then take each other’s hands. My dad says, “We’re getting married.”
I blink several times, then turn my ear toward them because I don’t think I heard them right. “Um…I beg your pardon?”
My mom chimes in like it’s no big deal, “We’ve started going out again over the last few months, and it’s been so much fun. We’re getting married again.”
My jaw hangs open. “This isn’t a prank?”
“That would be a very mean prank,” my dad says. “So, what does everyone want to eat? That Hawaiian bacon and pineapple breakfast bake looks good!”
“You do like pineapple, honey,” my mom says, putting her hand on my dad’s forearm.
I don’t even know what to think about them anymore. They actually look in love again. If there’s anything this past year has taught me, it’s that life is so crazy sometimes, you just have to go with it and not overthink it.
Grant leans over and whispers something in my ear while everyone mulls over their orders.
“By the way. I’ve been waiting to tell you. That video made over sixty-thousand dollars before we took it down.”
I try not to let my jaw hang open. “You’re not joking?” I whisper back.
“Nope. Want to take a trip to Paris this summer? I hear they have decent museums there,” he winks.
Grant squeezes my leg under the table. I look over at him and smile.
Well, if my parents can get married a second time, I can definitely fall in love forever with my best friend.
Epilogue: Maya
Later that same day, my family and I watch Grant take the mound against Saint Simeon. He’s on fire, and makes them look like a bunch of t-ballers. They can barely hit the ball.
There are a few odd stares from my former classmates—people who might recognize me, but I ignore them. I don’t care about the opinions of anyone else.
My brothers make friends with a few of the Alpha Z’s who are sitting in the stands watching with us. April, Alex, Faith, and I are all there together too. Charlotte is at a track meet today, so she’s not here.
“So where are you guys living next year?” I ask them.
“We’re staying in one of those theme houses off campus. There’s like ten of us.”
“Guys and girls?” I say.
“Yes,” Faith says. “And you’re welcome to come by any time.”
“Same for you all. My couch in Chicago is always open if you need to crash.”
Alex, April, and I look at our tattoos.
April leans on my shoulder. “I’m going to miss you, Maya. But you’ll be fine. If anyone is cut out for city life, it’s you. You’re a freaking badass.”
“Aww. That’s so nice of you.” I run my hand along her arm. “Sorry about Matt, by the way.”
She just found out—today—that Matt was cheating on her. “You’ve been surprisingly stoic about the whole thing,” I say.
April shrugs, and flips her brown hair. “Even though Matt and I were engaged, it didn’t feel real the whole time.”
“He was your Jude. After we broke up, I felt nothing. I knew it wasn’t meant to be. Grant, on the other hand, was different. Even after we broke up, I was wearing his shirt while I was doing the dishes.”
They all give me a funny look. “Oh, come on, don’t act like you haven’t put on DJ’s shirt to sleep in when he’s traveling for an away game, Alex.”
Alex raises a hand. “Fine. Guilty as charged.”
April sighs. “I’m pretty sure Matt literally was with me because my dad is rich.”
“He was?” Faith pipes up. “And you’re rich? You don’t seem…you know.”
“Seem what?” April says.
Alex adds, “I think Faith means to say, you don’t seem like a snobby rich person.”
April laughs. “Not all rich people are snobby. The point is…I’m ready to meet someone new now.”
I grin. “Like right now?”
She nods. “Right freaking now. I am sexually inexperienced, but I think I’m finally ready. And I think I realized why I didn’t want to do it with Matt. Because I wasn’t all that into him.”
