the whole ride, and while that might have caused resentment, Jacob could see the affection and loyalty between them.

Jacob tugged on Levi’s hand gently. “So?”

Levi turned, looking at him in confusion. “What?”

Jacob laughed. “Are you going to think about her offer?”

“Did she tell you my terms?” He asked.

“Both of them, yes.”

“What do you think?”

Jacob brought Levi’s hand to his lips and kissed his fingers. “As much as I hate the idea of you being thrown into possible danger again, I’m not going to turn away a chance to work with you. Even if I didn’t feel the way I did about you, I would always respect someone with no training like you, who also managed to be smart, adaptable, and levelheaded.”

“That so?”

Jacob’s eyes flicked up to where Levi had been glaring a moment ago. “And what does Lou think?”

Levi blinked in surprise. “He...wow, you struck him speechless.”

Jacob frowned. “How?”

Levi smiled softly. “Because he’s never had anyone but me care about him as a person. Anyone else has always treated him like…”

“Like a ghost or freak of nature,” Jacob guessed.

“Yeah.”

Jacob nodded. “Alright, so, what does he think?”

Levi looked upward, his smile widening. “I’d say he wants to keep you.”

Jacob cocked his head. “And what about you, do you wanna keep me too?”

“Well, considering you kind of blew up my house, I think you’re the one who’s going to have to keep me for a little while.”

Jacob drew him close, forcing the man to practically sprawl across him. Levi’s weight against him soothed him just as effectively as it had in Laura’s store hallway. Jacob ran a hand through Levi’s hair, playing with the strands.

“All three of us then,” Jacob said.

Levi lay his head on Jacob’s chest, grinning cheekily. “Let me guess, together?”

Jacob stroked his cheek. “I’ll take that as a christening of a new motto, and as agreement.”

Levi closed his eyes. “Together it is then.”

“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Jacob said softly, letting himself drift off with Levi curled against him.

Epilogue

Eighteen months later

Hitting the front door with his hip, Levi pushed it open, arms laden with plastic bags. With a grunt, he heaved himself down the hallway and into the kitchen. It was a spacious affair, with all new shining countertops and a fancy fridge that, for some reason, could connect to the internet. Not that it did much good out in the middle of nowhere where there wasn’t a connection, but Jacob had insisted.

Levi wanted to say that the whole house had been Jacob’s idea, which was true to a point. It had been Jacob’s idea to rebuild Levi’s house, pooling his own savings, along with what was left of Levi’s, and have it updated to a modern specification. But it had also involved a lot of Levi’s input, and much to his exasperation, input from the visiting townspeople as well.

Yet, when all was said and done, Levi had fallen in love with it. He’d always loved the plot and the town of Gilcreek being so close. It hadn’t been rebuilt huge, but it was sizable enough for him and Jacob to live comfortably. Two bedrooms, an office, one full bath with a tub that Levi had considered ridiculous until he’d spent the first night in it with Jacob. An actual dining room and a kitchen that could fit real appliances as well as allow room to move. It was more than just a base for them to relax in between assignments, it was their home.

Levi paused. “Jacob?”

“Yeah?” came the groggy reply from the living room.

Levi smiled, leaving the groceries to hunt down his boyfriend. “Didn’t mean to wake you.”

Like you weren’t making enough noise to wake the dead.

Levi huffed. “You know, the jury is still out on whether you might be the soul of someone who died, you know.”

And if that’s the case, you would have woken me too.

“Fine,” Levi grunted as he rounded the corner. “Sorry for waking you.”

Jacob grinned crookedly from where he lay sprawled on the couch. The expression was still sexy enough to shoot a bolt of heat to Levi’s groin. It didn’t help that Jacob managed to make sleep and bedraggled look good.

“S’alright,” Jacob said, patting the couch. “Get the shopping done?”

“Yeah, and Harrison called while I was out,” Levi told him, easing down onto the couch beside Jacob.

His boyfriend remained lying down but wrapped his thick arm around Levi’s waist. “Another assignment?”

Levi shook his head. “No, just an update. Lora is settling in nicely at one of the facilities and apparently
