of this world. I’ve never had such a connection before.

I was so worried about being like my Pops, but now that I’m with Violet, knowing what love is like, I’m nothing like him. I’m a decent, good man who would never do that to my woman. Even with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t do what my Pops did to me and Mom.

“Hey, sweetie.”

Speaking of the devil.

“Hey, Mom. How are you?”

“Fine. I miss you. I haven’t heard from you much. I wanted to make sure you were okay.”

I curse silently, kicking myself in the ass. I have been a shithead. “I’m sorry. It’s been a little hectic. I’ll take you to lunch on Saturday. How does that sound?” I ask, wanting to make it up to her. I should go to the jewelry store and pick her out a pair of sapphire earrings. It’s her favorite gem, and she deserves it.

“Oh, I’d love that, sweetie. You want me to come there or you come here?”

“How about you come here so I can show you around? Stay a few days. Plus, there is…” I grin when I think about Violet.

“What is it, Amos? Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, everything is great. There’s someone I want you to meet.” The line falls silent between us, and I lift the phone away from my ear to make sure we are still connected. “Mom? You there?”

“Yes, I’m just wondering if I heard you right. You want me to meet someone? Is this a set up? You know I don’t want to date.”

Of course she would think I want to introduce her to someone, because I have never, not once, introduced a woman to my Mom. “No, Mom. I met someone.”

She gasps and falls quiet again. “Really?”

I smile again. “Yeah. She’s it, Mom.”

“Oh my goodness. Tell me everything. Is she pretty? Is she smart? What’s her name?”

“She’s the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. She’s brilliant and open-minded, kind, and open to learning new things. She’s everything I’ve ever wanted. Her name is Violet.”

“Oh, Violet. Such a lovely name. Am I going to finally get grandbabies?” she nearly screams into the phone. “I have to call everyone. I’m going to be a grandma!”

“Mom, no. I didn’t say—”

“—I love you, sweetie. I’m so excited for you. I can’t wait to meet her. I’ll be there Saturday. I’m going to be a grandma!” she squeals again.

“Mom, wait—” but it’s too late.

She’s hung up on me.

I scratch my temple with the edge of my phone and try to figure out how I’m going to break the news that she isn’t going to be a grandma yet. She’s going to be so upset. She’s been waiting years for me to settle down and give her grandchildren. I want kids, and I want them with Violet, but I doubt she’s ready for something like that.

“I need another juice box. Homer has me all worked up.”

I peer over my shoulder to see Arrow squeezing the small box in his hand until it’s nothing but a folded-up piece of paper, then he tosses it on the ground. He huffs, mumbling under his breath as he marches into the employee lounge again. The door slams shut, and I’m left alone in the work bay.

Finally, some peace and quiet.

My phone chimes and it’s a text from Mom.

It says, ‘LOL.’

I reply and tell her, “LOL YOU TOO.”

She thinks it stands for ‘love you lots’, and no matter how many times I tell her it means ‘laugh out loud’, it just won’t sink in.

My phone buzzes again, and I groan, debating on throwing it against the wall. When I’m not busy, it doesn’t ring. When I’m busy, it rings non-stop.

“Yeah?” I answer, pinching the bridge of my nose.

“Kansas, you need to get here now.”

“Is everything okay, Prez?” I straighten. “Is it Violet?”

“No. No. Nothing like that. She went to go pick up her sisters from school. I have a few people here wanting to see you.”

Right, a few weeks ago she enrolled them in Atlantic City High School. Veronica is hating it. Her attitude knows no bounds.

“See me? People? Who?” I question.

“Just get here and make them leave. They won’t without talking to you. They even rented one of the apartments we built.”

I go to reply but he hangs up on me before I can answer. “Why is everyone hanging up on me? I don’t even know anyone else besides the club, Mom, and Nigel.”

Nigel. What if he’s come to visit me after traveling the world?

“Arrow!” I
