I asked.
“What?”
“Let’s pretend this isn’t our house. And that we can’t get caught.”
“Really?”
I nodded.
“Okay, I like it,” Mila said. “Let’s go.”
I grabbed her hand and we hurried out of the bedroom to the stairs.
We waited a few seconds to see or hear something.
I looked at her and nodded.
Carefully, we walked down the stairs.
She had her eyes on the front door.
I had my eyes elsewhere.
I saw movement and I pulled Mila against me and climbed back up three steps.
“Yeah, well if that’s the shit you want to do, I’ll put Tyler on it,” a guy said as he walked to the front door. He opened it and disappeared outside.
“Now’s our chance,” Mila said.
She broke away from me and ran down the stairs.
She waved her hands and bolted out the front door.
I moved a little slower but got there just in time to catch her jumping off the second to last step of the porch.
“Hurry!” she called back at me. “We can’t get caught!”
“Hey, wait a second!” Tyler’s worker yelled at Mila.
A second later, he froze and pointed at her. “You’re Mila.”
“I don’t know who you are,” Mila said.
The guy looked at me. “Silas.”
I walked down the porch steps. “Sorry about that. She’s had too much to drink today.”
“Oh?” the guy asked.
“It’s a problem,” I said. “I’d appreciate if you don’t tell Tyler.”
“Uh, yeah,” the guy said.
“Come on, Silas!” Mila yelled. “I’m so hammered. I need to get another drink. I can’t be sober!”
“See what I mean?” I asked.
The guy lifted an eyebrow.
“Hey,” I said. “One of the light fixtures broke. And the dining room table chair… broke. And the kitchen window won’t open. I need this all done perfectly.”
“It will be,” the guy said. “I promise.”
I walked away and Mila started to run.
She made me run after her.
To my truck.
She tried to run around the back but I made a daring move by jumping up into the bed and across and out, hitting the ground just as she ran into me.
I wrapped my arms around her and picked her up.
“You cheated,” she whispered.
“Fuck, darling, I’d do anything to hug you.”
We sat in my truck, looking at the house.
“Look at that house,” I whispered.
“I see it, Silas. I see it.”
“That’s your house.”
“That’s our house, Silas.”
“Nah,” I said, smiling at her. “That’s your house. I mean it. All yours, Mila. I can’t imagine what you’re feeling. I know what I’m feeling. I also know for you it’s completely different.”
“Thank you,” she said. “For saying that. For always understanding.”
“Now, you see the house. You see it’s standing. The Lovor family has nothing to do with this place and never will. No more bad dreams. Okay?”
“I’ll do my best,” Mila said.
Then she sighed.
“Hey,” I said. “This is going to be fine. It’s all going to work out.”
“How do you know that, Silas? How?”
She turned on the seat of the truck.
I looked into her eyes. “Mila, I just know. I don’t do this kind of thing either. I don’t say things I can’t back up or things I don’t believe. You know, growing up without my father around… I never asked for anything. From above. You know? The universe or whatever anyone wants to believe in. I never did that. I never asked. I never talked… I don’t know if I’m making sense or not.”
“I’m with you, Silas.”
“Okay. When my mother got tied up with my stepfather, the same thing. No matter how bad it got. How dark it got. I always just walked away. I didn’t ask for anything. I didn’t want anything. I had my guitar and my voice. That’s what I had. That’s what I left with. I guess my point…” I shook my head. “Mila, I’m asking now. I’m talking in my head. I’m talking in my sleep. I’m talking in my dreams. I have never once asked for a thing from this world. Until now. And it’s going to give it to me. Fuck, darling, it’s going to give it to me.”
“And what is it that you want, Silas?” Mila asked.
I touched her face. “Our family. You. Me. Hank. In that house right there. Every moment and every memory… it’s waiting for us, Mila.”
“Oh, Silas, I believe it too,” Mila said. “I feel guilty for believing it. Just in case…”
“There is no just in case.”
“I know.” Mila nodded. “I know.”
I pulled her closer to me. “This is it, darling. This is our family.”
“Our family.”
I kissed her.
Then I started the truck so we could go visit our son.
