star having to work a normal job.”

“Yeah, that’s good. Make fun of me.”

Mila dramatically ate the eggs as I got a fresh cup of decaf coffee for the old man at the table.

“You’re the guitar player, right?” the old man asked me.

“Yeah, I’ve been known to play here and there.”

“That’s good. I’ve always wanted to learn.”

“Never too late, sir,” I said. “If you ask me, time is bullshit.”

The old man laughed. “Tell that to my knees, back, hip, and eyes.”

“Maybe you just need that attention you were talking about earlier.”

“A pretty lady on top of me?” The old man nodded. “Maybe I’m working on that part next.”

I laughed and wished the old man good luck.

There was something about this town.

Everyone seemed damn horny all the time.

Olivia getting pregnant.

Edith forever making innuendos.

I heard about Zeke using Tyler’s picture on a dating app.

Crosby forever bragging about his latest bedroom entertainment.

And then, of course, Mila being pregnant.

Now this old man making dirty comments.

When I got back behind the counter, Theresa was waiting for me.

She waved for me to follow her into the kitchen.

Once there, she grabbed my wrist. “Hey. How are you doing?”

“Me? Fine. Why?”

“Sorry if I was little snappy this morning,” she said. “My stress level is…”

“I bet.”

“Honestly. How are you? How’s Mila? That was hectic.”

“Mila’s okay,” I said. “I’m good too. Figuring this all out as it happens I guess.”

“Okay. Good. I’m really glad you’re here, Silas. I’m glad Mila has you. I heard about the house. I think that’s so romantic of you to do.”

“Well, my understanding is, for a woman like Mila, there’s some big footprints left by her father. The way he took care of you and his family. I intend to be the same, Theresa.”

Theresa touched my face. “Yeah, that’s what scares me the most. It’s such a great life to live…”

But it could end at any second.

She didn’t say that, but she was thinking it.

I knew it.

Theresa then hugged me.

A second later, someone cleared their throat behind me.

I turned and it was Michael.

“Hey,” I said, throwing my hand out. “Michael. Good to see you.”

“What’s going on here?” Michael asked, ignoring my hand.

“Family talk,” Theresa said.

“Family talk… about…?” Michael asked.

“None of your damn business,” Theresa said as she touched my back.

I suddenly felt very uncomfortable.

“So I guess I’m not included in family stuff anymore, huh?” Michael asked.

“Oh, Michael, we were just talking about-”

“Don’t give in to him,” Theresa said, cutting me off.

Whoa.

I casually slipped away and back out to the front of the restaurant.

Anna had shown up, sitting next to Mila.

Asking a million medical questions.

I leaned against the counter.

Anna looked at me and her face turned red.

“You’re going to have to stop that, Anna,” Edith said as she stepped up next to me.

“What?” Anna asked.

“Every time you look at Silas, you blush,” Edith said. “He’s taken. By your cousin. He’s having a baby, with your cousin. Newsflash… it ain’t gonna happen!”

“Stop it!” Anna cried out, covering her face.

I laughed.

Mila patted Anna’s back. “Should I just let you and Silas fool around. A one-time freebie? Get it over with?”

“What?” Anna asked, her face turning redder as she looked at Mila.

“Don’t tease your cousin like that, Mila,” Edith said. “She’ll fall off the stool.”

“I hate you all,” Anna said.

“I’m just glad they aren’t picking on me,” I said. “I’m not cut out for this waiter job thing.”

“Oh, I’m sure you did fine,” Anna said to me. “You’re fine. I mean… not that… not like that… like fine… like sexy as fuck…”

She gasped and covered her mouth.

“Wow,” Mila said.

“Yikes,” Edith said. She then nudged me. “Your shift is over now, Silas. I think you better get out of here before my normally smart daughter melts into the floor like a snowman in Aruba.”

I slapped the counter and laughed. “Sorry, Anna.”

“Me too,” she said.

I took off my apron and handed it to Edith.

She then threw it at Anna.

“Seriously?” Anna asked.

“Come spend some time with me,” Edith said.

I walked around the counter, feeling relieved.

I looked at Mila and an idea came to me.

She hadn’t seen the house I bought her yet.

When Mila burst into tears, I wasn’t sure why.

I took a step away from her and put my hands out.

She covered her mouth and nose and wept.

Tears pouring from her eyes.

She kept blinking them away and more just kept coming.

“What did you do to her now?” Tyler yelled from the second-floor bathroom window.

I looked up at him and waved my middle finger on my right hand.

“Silas,” Mila said.

“Hey. I’m right here, darling.
