animals do you like?”
Yes, yes, let’s change the conversation.
“Did you and Silas hump?” Lucy asked.
“What?” I yelled.
“Lucy!” Olivia cried out. “Where did you hear that?”
“Zeke,” Lucy said. “He said something about rabbits and humping. I don’t think Silas looks like a rabbit. He’s not small and cuddly. His nose is too fat.”
“Yes it is,” I said. “Silas is not a rabbit. And, Lucy, let’s skip the rest of the questions here.”
“You were crying, Aunt Mila.”
“I was.”
“Was that the hormones?”
“Yes, it was,” I said. “Big time.”
Lucy looked at Olivia. “Are you having a baby boy or girl?”
“I don’t know,” Olivia said.
“Who decides?”
“It just… it’s a surprise,” Olivia said. “That’s what makes it all so exciting.”
“I don’t get it,” Lucy said. “Babies? In your stomachs? Does that mean when you eat the food falls on the baby? Chewed up food? Where does it poop?”
“Oh, my,” I said. I rubbed my forehead. “Lucy…”
I looked at Olivia and she was nodding at me.
Here I was, crying over the dumbest things. Olivia had her hands full. Pregnant with a kid like Lucy at home.
“Lucy, the baby is protected,” Olivia said. “In a bubble.”
“A bubble?”
“And when the baby is done growing, the bubble pops and the baby comes out,” I said.
“Comes out from where?” Lucy asked.
I laughed and put my hands up. “I’m out. I’m not getting into this.”
“Neither am I,” Olivia said.
“I want an answer,” Lucy said.
“There’s a secret portal that opens,” I said.
Olivia giggled.
Lucy rolls her eyes. “I don’t believe that. You know what? I’m going to ask Daddy.”
“That’s a great idea,” Olivia said. “We’ll be sure to corner him later together. Okay?”
“Okay,” Lucy said.
With that, Lucy jumped off the chair and took off.
Back upstairs she went and I looked at Olivia.
We both sighed at the same time.
I stood in the kitchen next to Olivia and helped her clean up a little.
“Looks like the coffee business is working, huh?” I asked.
“Very much so.”
“Your ideas were amazing.”
“Just a passing thought. Your family did all the work.”
“They are your family too, Olivia,” I said.
I nodded to the diamond ring on her finger.
Olivia held out her hand. “I’m in a state of shock over it all. How fast time goes by. I feel like it was just yesterday I was trapped in an office, trying to prove myself as a woman.”
“Now look at you,” I said. “Small-town living with this crazy family.”
“I can handle crazy.”
“I can’t,” I said.
Olivia frowned. “You mean Tyler and Silas?”
“Yup. They are both such idiots.”
“They love you. They want to protect you.”
“Don’t they get that fighting doesn’t help?”
“I think to them it does,” Olivia said. “I’m not sticking up for them. I can’t believe what I saw when I walked into that office.”
“They looked like stupid jocks,” I said. “Talk about a turn off.”
“I think we have to give them both a little slack,” Olivia said. “Tyler is under a lot of stress right now. You just saw Lucy for a minute. She’s like that all the time. So curious. I love it. To a point. And all Tyler wants is to make sure everything is perfect. When it’s not, he gets nervous.”
“Yeah, I bet.”
“Same for Silas,” Olivia said. “He’s used to a different life. He really loves you, Mila. He wants to be here. The fact that he’s willing to just walk up to Tyler and Crosby like nothing…”
“It takes balls.”
“Yes, it does.”
“I hate that I’m mean sometimes.”
“We all are.”
“I lost it on him this morning. He said something and I took it the wrong way.”
“Mila, your body is going through a lot of changes. Without a break. And there won’t be a break. And when it’s all said and done, they’re going to hand you a baby. Your body will still be going through stuff and now you’ve got a baby to care for. It’s a lot. So if you throw up and lose your cool for a minute, oh-fucking-well.”
I nodded. “I know. I get that. It’s just…”
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Tell me,” Olivia said as she touched my arm.
“You and Tyler have all of this. The house. Lucy. You have a foundation. You have a life. Even down to planning a wedding.”
“So?”
“What do Silas and I have? We met on the road. I got so lucky that his manager picked me up. Mickey threw me into shows to see if I could handle it. And he told Silas to watch and make sure nobody bothered me. We’ve been kind of forced to be together, you know? And now with a baby…”
