keep to that promise.”

Tyler took a deep breath. “Okay, Silas.”

“Now listen to me,” I said. “I have ideas. A lot of ideas for the house. Mila will too. This is her house. I want everything she wants. No matter what. The cost doesn’t matter, Tyler. I’m not saying that to brag or anything. I’m being serious.”

“Okay,” Tyler said. “I will text you some information then. Get the house figured out and we’ll go from there. I’ll start messing with plans and whatnot. We won’t know everything that needs to be done until we get in there and start looking around. These projects aren’t like they show on television though, Silas. There are no commercial breaks. It doesn’t take an hour.”

“All I want is to see Mila carry our baby through the door of our house,” I said.

“I’ll do the best I can. For my sister and either my niece or nephew.”

“Not even a little bit for me?” I asked.

“Goodbye, Silas,” Tyler said.

He hung up the call and I laughed.

Hey, that went better than the last time I talked to him, right?

I stood outside the bathroom door.

I waited as long as I could.

The second I heard Mila crying, that’s when I hit my limit.

When I opened the door, she looked at me in the reflection of the mirror.

“I know,” I said. “But I can’t let you cry alone.”

She turned on the water and let out a groan.

Then she burped.

Her face turned red.

“It’s okay, darling,” I said. I touched her back. “It’s okay with me.”

Mila threw an elbow. “I don’t give a shit if it’s okay with you or not. Do you think I’m crying because of you? I’m crying because I wake up every morning and throw up. That’s why I’m crying. It hurts to throw up on an empty stomach, Silas. My stomach and ribs hurt. My throat burns. You’re an asshole!”

Mila ran out of the bathroom.

I let out a sigh.

I rinsed out the sink and carefully moved through the inn room to find Mila standing at the couch.

Taking deep breaths.

“How’d you sleep?” I asked.

“Terrible.”

“I’m sorry. Were you uncomfortable or bad dreams?”

She looked at me. “I don’t know. Maybe both. I can’t tell what my body is doing.”

“Growing a baby, Mila.”

“No shit, Silas. You have no idea.”

“I don’t.”

“Then don’t talk about it. And, yeah, maybe I had a dream or two. You out on tour, screwing non-pregnant women. Women with great bodies too. What’s my body going to look like, huh? I’ve looked up things. Things change, Silas.”

“That’s okay.”

“You’re going to say everything you think you need to say to make me happy, aren’t you?”

Mila stared at me with fire in her eyes.

Moody as hell…

I just stood there.

I told myself silence was my best friend.

Then I decided to ignore my best friend.

And I spoke.

“Hey,” I said. “With the morning sickness thing. What if you change your diet? Eat something different to keep it calm?”

My mind said hey, you’re being helpful!

My heart said hey, you just dug your own grave!

Mila’s eyes grew bigger. “What did you just say to me? Change my diet? What does that mean? Am I getting fat to you? Great. You think I’m ugly already.”

“Whoa, darling, no. I just meant…”

“I don’t care what you meant, Silas,” Mila said. “I can’t help what my body goes through right now. I can’t control it. Change my diet? Are you out of your mind? Why did you even come back here, huh?”

Fire shot out of her eyes and mouth.

I moved toward her, carefully.

“I’m going to give you some space, Mila,” I said.

“That’s the smartest thing you’ve ever said to me,” she spat.

“Can I at least hug you before I get going?”

Mila rolled her eyes and folded her arms.

I took my chances and snuck in a quick hug.

And a kiss to the top of her head.

I left the inn and got into my truck.

I started to smile as I drove away but then a sinking feeling hit me.

She was newly pregnant and I wasn’t able to help her. I was already saying and doing the wrong things.

How was this going to play out?

How was I going to do as a father?

I had nobody to call for advice.

The closest I could get was Mila’s brother and the last time me and Tyler were alone, we fought.

I wondered if I should have left the inn at all.

Was that right? Wrong?

I groaned.

Something told me I was in for a long ride here…
