Just a Positive Pregnancy Test - London Casey Page 0,10

stings on the guitar and moved through some chords. Desperate for a single line of lyrics. All I could do…

I grabbed the pen and wrote Mila’s name again.

Chapter Five

MILA

I sat in the doctor’s office and hated myself.

Both Olivia and Tyler told me to call Silas.

I wasn’t exactly ready for that yet.

The collection of positive pregnancy tests wasn’t enough for some reason. I wanted to see the baby. I wanted to see… I wanted to hear…

Tyler called Dr. Smallers, who was the local doctor in town. She was capable of handling some things with pregnancy but not ultrasounds and exams. So we had to leave Gardner to go to an OB/GYN.

I sat there and played with my nails.

Olivia sat next to me.

Tyler paced the waiting area.

“There’s nobody else here,” he said. “What’s taking so long?”

“We’re early,” Olivia said.

“And you’re late,” Tyler said to her.

“That’s your fault,” Olivia said with a smile.

“Are you two arguing?” Lucy asked. She was on the other side of Olivia.

“No,” Tyler said. “We’re in love.”

Lucy sighed and rolled her eyes.

A nurse opened the door and called for Olivia.

We all stood up and walked toward the back.

The nurse looked at me. “I’m Mila. I’m next after Olivia. And I’m with them.”

“Oh. Sure.”

We all went into a room that was dark and quiet.

There was an ultrasound machine sitting there.

Along the walls were pictures of pregnant women and all the different stages of pregnancy. Some were cartoons. Some were a little more realistic. Pictures of what was going to happen to my body. My stomach… my breasts… the way organs were pushed around… and then… the whole birthing process. A baby coming out of…

I shivered.

“That looks weird,” Lucy said as she pointed to the walls. “They look like aliens.”

I looked down at her and smiled.

The ultrasound tech entered the room.

Tyler hurried to introduce himself and the rest of us.

Himself, Olivia, Lucy, and then me.

“Mila,” the ultrasound tech said to me. “You’re also pregnant.”

“That’s correct,” I said. “I guess there’s something in the water.”

Then it became weird.

Very weird.

“So… two pregnant women and one father?”

“What?” Tyler asked. “No. Whoa. Wait…”

“I’m his sister,” I said.

The ultrasound tech gasped. “Oh, I’m sorry. I thought… it doesn’t matter what I just thought. Oh my. I just made a complete fool of myself here. This is what I get for giving up coffee in the morning. I thought it was making me too jittery. Note to self, lack of coffee turns me into an idiot.”

“That’s not a nice word, ma’am,” Lucy said in her cockiest tone.

“You’re right,” the ultrasound tech said. “You know what? Let’s redo this whole thing.”

She literally left the room and came back in.

“Hey there,” she said in a happy voice. “I’m Steph. I’m the ultrasound tech. And I hear we have two pregnancies today, right?”

Tyler laughed. “Right. This is my sister, Mila. Next to her is my daughter, Lucy. And this beautiful woman right here is my fiancée, Olivia.”

“Perfect,” Steph said. “Let’s get this party going.”

“This is a party?” Lucy asked.

“No, Lucy,” Tyler said. “She was just joking.”

“Oh,” Lucy said. She looked at me and rolled her eyes. “This lady is having a rough day.”

I laughed.

Luckily, so did Steph.

I really didn’t like that Silas wasn’t there with me.

I felt worse by the second.

Right up until I looked at the screen and saw it.

It.

The baby.

My baby.

Our baby.

Mine and Silas’s baby.

It was just Steph and I in the room. Olivia cried when she saw her baby. Tyler stared at the screen and covered his mouth. Lucy looked and didn’t understand what she was looking at. She kept asking where the baby’s hands, feet, nose, and eyes were. It was cute to see Lucy so innocent.

Watching my brother tear up over an ultrasound picture reminded me just how amazing of a guy he was. I knew if Dad was alive, he’d be right outside the door, tears in his eyes, wanting to see the pictures of his new grandchild.

Olivia looked at me in disbelief.

I mouthed to her no shit and pointed to my stomach and rolled my eyes.

We both smiled.

Tyler kissed Olivia.

They both ended up crying by the time they exited the room.

I was perfectly fine with having just me in the room.

In a way, I needed it.

“There you go,” Steph said to me. “There’s your little peanut.”

It had the same shape as Olivia’s. Which made sense.

Steph rattled off the due dates and I was due two weeks before Olivia.

“Looks like an exciting time for your family,” Steph said. “Two babies at the same time.”

“Can
