Joker (Hell's Ankhor #8) - Aiden Bates Page 0,84

finished his drink, then slowly wobbled to his feet. He sniffed, blinked hard, and then began to make his way to the front of the bar, moving a little slowly and unsteadily. He rifled through his jacket pocket, fishing out his keys.

Gunnar saw it before I did. He stalked over, putting a hand on Dawson’s chest, stopping him in his tracks. “I know you’re not thinking about driving home right now,” he growled.

“Fuck you,” Dawson said, a little slurred. “I’m fuckin’ fine. What I do is none of your business.”

“The safety of this town is my fuckin’ business,” Gunnar snapped. “I don’t care about your dumb ass, but you’re gonna kill somebody driving in that condition.”

“Fuck you,” Dawson repeated, with a little more heat in his voice. “Get the fuck out of my way.”

“That’s it,” Gunnar said, and went to grab Dawson’s keys.

From the way Gunnar straightened up, and the way Dawson’s hands balled into fist as he pulled his keys out of reach, I knew shit was about to go down.

“Whoa, whoa,” I said, rushing forward and grabbing Dawson roughly by the shoulder. “Okay, that’s enough of that.” I nodded at Gunnar. “I’ll take him home. Again.”

“We’re enforcers, not a fuckin’ taxi service,” Gunnar said. “This better be the last time. Get your fucking shit together, Dawson, or you’re going to be out of a job.”

“Let’s go,” I snapped, dragging Dawson out of the bar as he grumbled about Gunnar not being able to fire him, more to himself than to anything else.

I dragged him around the corner and into the back parking lot, where my truck was parked.

“Gunnar almost fucking laid you out back there,” I said with a grimace. “You better shut your fucking mouth if you know what’s good for you.”

“Yeah?” Dawson asked. He pulled out of my hold, standing a little straighter as we approached the club truck. “Thought you already knew what’s good.”

A coy smile curled his lips as he watched me, gray eyes flashing.

Even drunk, even irritable and obnoxious, he was still somehow so fucking hot. Like the alcohol didn’t make him sloppy, just made him loose and languid and dirty-minded.

“Shut up,” I said, but it sounded a little flustered even to my own ears. “I’m taking you home.”

“Yeah?” Dawson teased with a smirk. “Am I gonna get a repeat performance of last time?”

I went to unlock the driver’s side door, planning on ignoring him, but before I could get the key in the lock, Dawson grabbed me by the shoulder, turned me around, and shoved me roughly against the truck. I hit the metal with a whump, nearly knocking the breath from my lungs. Dawson’s hands were on me just as fast, gripping my hips as he stepped close.

“Come on, Nix,” he said, smiling. “Quit playin’ hard to get.”

I meant to say something like piss off, or get the fuck off me, but instead I knocked my head back against the truck and said, “Dawson.” All quiet and breathy and pathetic.

Dawson made a low, almost growling sound in his chest, and he looked like he was about to make another asshole comment, and my self-control fucking cracked again. I grabbed him by the hair and dragged him in for a hard, messy kiss, sloppy with more than a hint of teeth.

And God, it felt good to shut him the fuck up for once. To feel like I was the one with the control of this situation. Dawson shifted closer and I felt his hard cock press against my hip.

And—fuck. Fuck. I was still on duty. And he was still wasted, which was a hard line that I was not going to cross.

I broke the kiss and shoved him off me. He was still a little dazed, and I used his wide-eyed state to shove him into the cab of the truck.

“I’m taking you home,” I said firmly. “And this isn’t happening again.”

Dawson shot me a dark look. “Sure. If you say so.”

I started the truck and tightened my hands on the steering wheel. I did say so. This was not going to happen again. I wasn’t going to let it.
