Ink's Second Chance - Carol Dawn Page 0,56

steps in front of the door and listen to the men laugh and drink. I close my eyes and think of Rachel. I can only pray that she makes it out of here before Mike gets his hands on her.

Get out, woman! Save those babies. Save yourself.

The air kicks on and I smile.

Chapter Thirty

Ink

“It’s been an hour,” Rachel’s sweet voice says in my ear.

“I haven’t seen movement in a while,” Chains tells us.

“Let’s get this party started,” Trigger says, already waltzing forward.

“Damnit, Trigger, wait for the rest of us,” Brick grumps, running after him.

“Go now, baby,” I say. “And, please, be careful.”

“On my way,” her sweet voice says in my ear. “Going silent.”

I hate what she’s about to do. If we can trust this Elizabeth chick, then Carlos and most of the people inside that building will be trapped. But Rachel still has to watch out for fucking Mike or random people.

“Ready, brother?” Wolf asks.

“More than,” I admit.

It takes us five minutes to reach the gate. By the time I get there, Trigger and Brick have already taken care of the guards and have the gate opened.

“You work fast,” Chains exclaims.

“They were cowards,” Trigger grumps.

Brick just laughs. “Trig wanted a fight and they bent like twigs.”

“I’m in,” Rachel whispers. “We’re in the fifth cell and we’re all hiding in the back.”

“Rachel, is there a bed in the cell with you?” Bear asks.

“Yeah,” she answers.

“Good, grab the mattress and place it in front of you. It’s not much but it will give you and the kids the best protection until we can get you out safely.”

We hear Rachel talking to the little girls. Trying to get them calm.

“Here, sweetie,” she says. “Take my shirt. I want all of you to get behind my chair and try to stay as quiet as you can. Oh crap, Sammy I have a problem.”

“What?” I ask frantically.

“I don’t think any of these kids speak English. Espanol?”

“Si,” a little girl answers.

“I got this, guys,” Slim says in our ears. “Rachel, just repeat after me. I’ll say the exact same thing you just asked them to do.”

“Alright, brothers, let's go.”

***Rachel***

I watch as the door opens, and the guys walk in. I have never in my life felt so much relief.

“Baby,” I hear Sammy whisper. Except this time, not only can I hear it in one of my ears, but up close and personal. I peer around the thin mattress and smile when I see his hands wrapped around the other side of the bars.

“I’m here,” I whisper. I want so much to drop the mattress and dash to him as fast as possible. To feel his arms around me again. But I don’t move.

“Almost, baby,” he says as if he’s reading my mind. “Almost.”

“Don’t move from this cell, Miss Rachel,” Wolf tells me.

I smile at wolf. “I won’t.”

Sammy stands there for a second longer before following his men deeper into the building.

“Guys,” Slim says through the earpiece. “Detective Dick is ten minutes out and he’s pissed that you didn’t wait.”

I hear a couple of the guys snort, but they don’t respond.

“You doing okay, Rachel?” Slim asks.

“Yeah, we are,” I whisper.

Suddenly I hear a deep guttural grunt and a loud thud through my ears.

“Rachel, sweetheart,” I hear Brick say. “Have you met a large beefy man with a face full of scars?”

“That sounds like Mike,” I say.

“Don’t fucking touch him” Sammy orders. “He’s mine.”

“I’ll tie him up and toss him in this here closet,” Brick says cheerfully. “We’ll collect him on the way out.”

I shake my head and smile. I might not be able to exact my revenge against Frankie and Antonio, but it looks like Mike won’t be getting so lucky.

I sit here for ten minutes as I listen to the men locate all the children. Luckily, they didn’t run into very many of Carlos’s men. The ones they did were “taken care of” by Trigger. I’m not sure if that means knocked out or killed. I’m also not sure that I care.

“Please tell me that there are no more, Slim,” Chains begs. “My heart can’t take much more.”

“The last group is the ones with Rachel,” He answers.

“Hey guys, I think I found the basement door,” Bear says. “It’s locked from the inside just like the woman said.”

“It’s quiet,” Wolf says.

“Wrap it up, guys,” Slim orders. “Our favorite detective just arrived.”

“Let’s get you out of here,” Sammy says. I look up and see him back on the other side of the cell.

“Key’s baby,” he demands.

“Estas segura,” I
